- Hi, this is a double act, my name is Mahendra I will talk about the work of the BL Labs project at the Library and my colleague Stella will talk about the work she has been doing with the computer games industry at the BL The Labs project is trying to ‘open up’ British Library digital content and data such as digitised books, images and maps) to encourage those interested, particularly in the Arts and Humanities area to ‘Experiment with our digital collections’ to use it for their work and ideas and to consider questions / projects that only become possible to ask or do when you are get access to large amounts of digital content and data. Our website is available at labs.bl.uk. The project is kindly funded by the Andrew Mellon Foundation.
- 1min 58 seconds We adopt a ‘here is our stuff’… come up with some interesting research ideas and questions of what to do with it kind of approach. We engage with people through various mechanisms such as competitions, hack events, workshops, ideas labs and projects. We then try to work with them and try and support them where we can so that the Library can learn how to support those who use our digital content in better ways for the future. Our main audience at the moment are researchers, but we have been also working with creatives, software developers etc. Let’s talk about some of our outputs.
- Dan Norton, one the competition winners from last year, was a former music DJ but now a researcher. We worked with him to help him start to build an interface that would allow different kinds of digital content to be mixed together to create new art, e.g. music, text, images, etc.
- The curatorial platform was created to re-use British Library metadata which can often seem pretty dry and turn it into something pretty engaging, interesting and interactive. The project showcases the digital narratives created by Art students using digitised British Library Oil paintings from colonial India using a very engaging set of user interfaces, Geolocation, Slideshows and timelines.
- Bob Nicholson is one this year’s competition winners. We are working with him right now to complete his work for our showcase on November 3. I will let him speak for himself.
- We snipped out images from digitised books and put them on to Flickr on December 13 2013, there were over a million, but the problem we had was that we knew which books they came from, but we didn’t’ have any information about the images. By releasing them onto flickr, we have got people to start tagging them and using them in very creative ways. Now my colleague will talk about how the British Library uses it’s digital content to inspire computer games designers!
