Editor's Notes
Introduce yourself: say who you are (your job at the BL). The BL Labs Research award recognises outstanding and innovative work that has been carried out using the British Library’s digital collections and data and which has an impact on some aspect of Research. This year, we are highlighting 7 entries:
“BL/QFP Imaging Hack Days” by names listed.
The Imaging Hack Days have allowed for our very talented imaging staff to apply their skills and expertise to the collections we're digitising, offering fresh perspectives to familiar material. It has meant that new skills have been learnt, and old ones shared across the team. It has also led to some interesting collaborations between areas of the BL/QFP that don't traditionally work together. BL Labs thought this was an excellent example of the kind of experimental thinking we want to see demonstrated across the Library.
“Automatic recognition (OCR/HTR) of early printed Bengali texts and historical Arabic handwriting” by Tom Derrick et al.Two initiatives around OCR/HTR of non-Latin scripts are ground-breaking. They're looking to increase accessibility and usability of the Library's digital collections by enabling full text search and analysis. The ultimate aim is to be able to automatically transcribe BL collections at scale, and feed the transcriptions back into our strategic systems.
“Google Sheets add on for UL Web Archives” by Andy Jackson (BL) and Tom Storarr from The National Archives. An add-on for Google Sheets to allow anyone working with web archives a quick access tool to compare a batch of URLs and see what web archive is holding them. This tool will allow curators to compare small batches of their holdings with other web archive collections in the UK with that of the Internet Archive.
“UK Web Archive new user interface” by Andrew Jackson, Nicola Bingham and Jason Webber
The new user interface opens up access to the UK Web Archive collections of billions of items and more than one hundred curated collections. The website provides sophisticated search and browse functions, allowing users to find out what the Library has collected and also find out how archived websites can support their research interests.
“The Pelagios Web-Maps-t working group” by Gethin Rees and Adi Keinan-Schoonbaert
The working group will produce a white paper that will provide guidelines for the visualisation of spatio-temporal data. Last, the GeoJSON-T standard offers great potential for improving the inter-operability of humanities and cultural heritage data and improving geospatial discovery software, for example in the ‘Towards a National Collection’ AHRC projects. Through promoting the standard and using the Library’s collections to improve its specifications, this workshop hopes to encourage its adoption.
“#HundredDaysOffensive posters tweeted by the Library's @UntoldLives twitter account in 2018” by Jeremy Nagle
The project was a great opportunity for the Library to acknowledge the centenaries of the constituent battles of the Hundred Days Offensive and the dead and the wounded and the missing and the damaged and the survivors. The Pelagios Web-Maps-t working group
“@BL_MadeDigital: #AToUnknown Twitter campaign” by Heritage Made Digital team
Since January 2019, Heritage Made Digital have been running a year-long Twitter campaign exploring the British Library’s digital collections one language a week: #AtoUnknown. This campaign addresses a simple problem: the difficulty of finding and searching BL digitised collections online.
The runner up for this year’s British Library Labs Staff award is …….
