The Role of Labs
Labs is as much as being a space in which new projects
and approaches can be bench-tested; but is important as a
fragment of an ongoing negotiation about the role of the
institutions of memory and knowing. And getting that role
right is imperative…

Editor's Notes

  • #4 Why is it increasing? Digitisation, Web Archive more and more born digital, e-legal deposit.
  • #6 50 seconds <click1>So, the very nature of digital allows us to <click2> break down what were previously bound items down into fundamental bits of information and data. These bits of data can be recombined, duplicated and linked to in infinite ways. This is fundamentally changing our view of research. It’s a bit like the <click3> ‘Tower of Babble’ sculpture to the right by Brian Dettmer , created by recombining bits from books, words and sentences cut out and put back together in different ways to create something new, surprising and beautiful. This is what scholars are doing with digital content. Let us now move on to what is understood by the term ‘digital scholar’.
  • #8 "The production, use and integration of digital content, services and tools to facilitate scholarship and research. Allow research areas to be investigated in new ways, using new tools, leading to new discoveries and analysis to generate new understanding
  • #15 Play 26 seconds to 1 minute 1 seconds
  • #23 Play all the way through…
  • #24 Possibly using our maps
  • #26 Let’s look at a brief video of about Pieter and his entry. Pieter is working with us to extend his work and try to make the tool available in the reading room. 1 min 30
  • #29 The British Library began a project to crowdsource the georeferencing of its scanned historic mapping in 2011 by partnering with Klokan Technologies. Over 8,000 maps have already been "placed" by participants checked for accuracy and approved for reviewers. We are currently on the sixth release, which features over 50,000 maps from the 17th, 18th, and 19th-century book illustrations http://www.bl.uk/maps/ Video explanation: https://vimeo.com/36419466
  • #31 Add image of Peter Balman
