2. DNS History
History dates back to the ARPANET era.
Stanford Research Institute maintained a text file
named HOSTS.TXT
Paul Mockapetris designed the Domain Name System
at the University of California, Irvine in 1983
The Internet Engineering Task Force published the
original specifications in RFC 882 and RFC 883 in
November 1983

In 1984, four UC Berkeley students—Douglas Terry,
Mark Painter, David Riggle, and Songnian Zhou—
wrote the first Unix name server implementation,
called the Berkeley Internet Name Domain (BIND)
Server.
In November 1987, RFC 1034 and RFC 1035
superseded the 1983 DNS specifications. Several
additional Request for Comments have proposed
extensions to the core DNS protocols

We have root (.)- 13 root servers
We have GTLDs eg .com, .org, .durban, .club, ….
We have ccTLDs eg .ke .tz
We have Second Level Domains eg .co.ke, .or.tz,
.co.uk

Since development of DNS, Domain names have been a critical part
of our infrustracture.
gTLDs are Generic Top Level Domains
Initially we had 8 gTLDs
ccTLDs are country Code top level domain
We experienced the ―.com fever‖ 
There are over 500 million domains registered globally
There are over 300 gTLDs approved

Africa has experienced slow domain growth
South Africa has over 1M ccTLD domains and its
gTLD Domains are growing fast
Kenya has 45,00 Domains
Nigeria has over 60,000 domains
Africa has an avarage of 1.4 m domains
Germany (.de) has over 3m domains

7. DNS in Kenya
Generally in Kenya is still growing its ccTLD
domains
On average for every 300 domains registered at
least 10 are .ke domain.
There is need to increase the number of
domains to at least 50/50

8. What KeNIC is doing
To increase the odds we are planning on
increasing .ke brand awareness
Inform the public including people from the
grassroots on the importance of having domains
Make .ke domains as affordable as .com– Price
of domains were reduced to ksh 650 for
registrars and the agreed RRP is ksh1000

9. Why low uptake in kenya
/Africa?
.com were introduced earlier than .ke domains
.ke affordability issues
Few people have knowledge of existance of .ke
domains

10. Reasons to Increase
uptake of Domains
We have a population of over 40M
10% of the population register .ke domains.
Sell a domain at ksh 1000 and buy it from KeNIC at Ksh 650, Profit =
1.8 Billion
We need to beat South Africa  
.ke is a Billion shillings industry $$$$$$$$.
Get your share now.
Google has just moved to the domain business. That means more
$$$$$$$
