Benjamin Franklin was born poor in Massachusetts in 1706 and ran away to New York at age 12 after enjoying reading. As an adult, he tried but failed to make peace between the American colonies and England, leading to the Revolutionary War. Franklin was famous for his experiments with electricity and inventions like the lightning rod. He helped write the Declaration of Independence and establish the first fire department in the American colonies.
