Benjamin Franklin was born in 1706 in Boston and became a famous scientist, publisher, and statesman during the 18th century in colonial North America. Some of his notable inventions included bifocal glasses, swim fins, the glass harmonica, and an iron stove. He is also known for his famous kite experiment during a thunderstorm which proved that lightning is an electrical current and led to the invention of the lightning rod. As a publisher, Franklin opened his own print shop and published several popular newspapers. He also played an important role as a statesman, helping to write both the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution before serving as a diplomat during the American Revolution.
