Breastfeeding is the process of feeding human breast milk to a child, either directly from the breast or by expressing the milk from the breast and bottle-feeding it to the infant. Exclusive breastfeeding means that the infant receives only breast milk. No other liquids or solids are given – not even water. Types of breastmilk: Colostrum - is the milk secreted during first week after delivery. Transitional milk - is the milk secreted during the following two weeks. Mature milk - follows transitional milk. It is thinner and watery but contains all the nutrients essential for optimal growth of the baby. Preterm milk - is the breast milk of a mother who delivers prematurely. Foremilk – is the milk secreted at the start of a feed. It is watery, is rich in proteins, sugar, vitamins, minerals and water, and satisfies the baby’s thirst. Hind milk - comes later towards the end of a feed and is richer in fat content and provides more energy, and satisfies the baby’s hunger. It is a presentation on breastfeeding and Weaning Foods 2023.
