Many different algorithms are being developed to find the most compatible matches. For example, Tinder cooperates with Spotify to match potential partners based on their taste in music. New algorithms and AI-powered solutions like AIMM, Bernie or betterhalf will also boost new developments. Furthermore, we expect Dating Services to converge with social networks. Dating portals will focus less on the search for a partner for life and will rather place more emphasis on meeting new people instead (like Badoo). Also, social media platforms like Facebook are already rolling out their own dating features, boasting advantages many other providers don't have more than 2 billion active users.
Unsettled competition landscape The dating industry is competitive and has no single, dominant brand globally. Although Match is undoubtedly the largest public company in the sector, the apps in Match’s portfolio, Tinder, PlentyOfFish, OkCupid, and match.com, still compete with a large number of other matchmaking apps. Tinder is currently Top 3 in the U.S. market and the rank of top dating apps are still changing, making opportunities for every market player. Many social media platforms are gradually entering the matchmaking industry as well.

The document proposes several strategies for Lufthansa, including expanding their social media presence and "Miles and More" loyalty program. It suggests launching a "Network Miles" program on Facebook and Twitter that rewards customers for promotional actions with reward points. It also proposes adding new rewards programs for kids, early bookings, gifting miles, and e-gift cards to the "Miles and More" program. Additionally, it discusses developing "Mobility Advance" technology to provide personalized travel services and real-time business intelligence through mobile apps and augmented reality.
Set to transform the economy and create a single national market, the Goods and Services Tax (GST) is the single biggest tax reform since the start of India's liberalisation. Its implications cannot be exaggerated: from lowering the tax burden on consumers to enabling free movement of goods and services across the country, it could be transformative for the country.
Yet, riding piggyback on GST is a plethora of concerns. For a measure taking effect on July 1, 2017, it was surprising that we didn’t know till just days ago what would be taxed and at what rate. Compliance costs are a worry as is the fact that petroleum products are outside the purview of GST. For many, the tax slabs have a hue of political compromise.
In the latest Pitchfork Partners Insights initiative, we seek to demystify and deconstruct GST to create an understanding of what it means for you and the country as a whole. We hope it is useful.

Union Budget 2017 - A Pitchfork Partners AnalysisAshraf Engineer
Finance Minister Arun Jaitley presented a Union Budget of many firsts today. Apart from integrating the Rail Budget into itself, the presentation was advanced to February 1 to enable better operationalisation. Also, plan and non-plan classifications were eliminated for a holistic view of allocations.
The Budget was presented in the wake of demonetisation and all eyes were on what the government would do next. The finance minister focused on rural development and agriculture, while laying emphasis on tax compliance, affordable housing and social investment as part of a 10-point agenda.
Here's an overview and analysis of the Budget.
Leadership in the professional services industryAshraf Engineer
Leadership in the professional services industry is tough.
Law firms, BFSI firms, money management agencies, management consultants, advertising firms, etc, face unique challenges. Not only do they face tremendous client pressure, there is also a serious talent challenge. As a result, leaders are often forced to give up leading for managing.
However, never has leadership been more critical for professional services firms. It is vital for such firms' long-term survival.
* This is a presentation I put together for our firm's co-founder a couple of months ago.
As he set foot in New Delhi to be the guest of honour at the Republic Day parade, Barack Obama became the first sitting US president to visit India twice – an indicator of how important a trade and strategic ally the country has become to the US. On the radio show ‘Mann Ki Baat’, co-hosted with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he said: “We are making a lot of history in a very short time.”
The two countries covered a lot of ground on crucial policy issues during the three-day visit. MSLGROUP’s latest infographic, ‘Breakthrough Moment’, highlights the implications of the visit, analysing the substance behind the symbolism.
The key announcements included a clearing of the decks for civilian nuclear cooperation. Besides opening up opportunities for India to acquire nuclear technology, it would also mean significant opportunities for US companies to supply equipment and build reactors.
The renewal of the decade-long defence pact will enable joint manufacturing and boost the Indian defence industry. The joint strategic vision for Asia-Pacific and the Indian Ocean will help safeguard maritime routes.
In addition, President Obama’s announcement of $4 billion worth of investments is set to boost trade, investment and jobs in India.
Public Affairs Round-up - September 2014 - MSLGROUPAshraf Engineer
After the bruising general election, India’s new government got down to the business of preparing the Union Budget. Much was expected of the Narendra Modi regime, which projected a pro-business, pro-reform image throughout the campaign.
While reactions to the Budget were mixed, it did include two important policy changes. Investment norms for insurance and defence manufacturing were changed to attract more foreign players. Both sectors have been touchy topics, with battlelines drawn between those for liberalised investment norms and those in favour of a more conservative approach.
It’s clear that a long, hard road lies ahead on the economic front and that these are the first steps of a fledgling government of which much is expected. There will be other, tougher decisions to make – reducing subsidies, a simpler tax regime that protects states’ interests and a land acquisition policy that will spur industrial growth while conserving land-owners’ interests, to name just a few.
With this edition, MSLGROUP’s Public Affairs Round-up takes on a new look and structure too. Now onwards, PAR will be a quarterly. It will have more detailed analyses and content than its earlier avatar, and will incorporate commentary and data that is more relevant to you.
MSLGROUP’s insights team will play the role of an observer of the Indian economic and policy environment, and will provide analyses that we hope will benefit you.
Public affairs round up - september 2014 - mslgroupAshraf Engineer
The document discusses India raising the foreign direct investment (FDI) cap in the insurance and defence sectors from 26% to 49%. This is expected to boost investment in these sectors and increase insurance penetration and domestic defence manufacturing. However, there are also concerns about foreign control and technology transfer. The defence sector in particular may see greater investment but investors will still want management control for technology transfer, which the 49% cap does not provide. Overall the changes aim to modernize these sectors but uncertainties around rules and implementation remain.
India has just completed a historic election. The results are staggering. While many expected that the Narendra-Modi-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) would come to power, the landslide that materialised was a surprise to many.
Clearly, Modi’s emphasis on the economy, ease of doing business, infrastructure and job creation struck home.
With voters handing him a decisive victory, it is now Modi’s turn to deliver. His pro-business slant and reputation as an ace administrator mean that expectations are sky-high.
In the latest edition of ‘Public Affairs Round-up’, MSLGROUP identifies what is likely to be the new government’s list of priorities.
Modi has his work cut out. None of the challenges before – from cutting red tape to clearing critical projects – will be easy. It will require more than numbers in Parliament; an ability to take people along will be vital.
India is set to choose its next government in an election that is easily the most intense of the last 40 years.
Local businesses and multinational corporations are watching keenly, as are sociologists and historians. Dependent on the results are the economic path India treads – whether decidedly capitalist or a middle path with a strong social focus.
This primer of the Lok Sabha elections is an attempt by MSLGROUP to help you understand all that’s at stake in this election. It has been conceived as a one-glance ‘ready reckoner’ of sorts and is part of the ‘Voice of India 2014’ election insights initiative that we launched last year.
Public Affairs Round-up - MSLGROUP in India - February 2014Ashraf Engineer
As India strides towards the general election, the media and corporations are in overdrive trying to understand how the country will vote. Based on these projections are critical investments and other business decisions.
In the past few months, our television screens and newspaper front pages have been filled with pre-election surveys predicting seat share and impact on policy. Their results vary vastly, depending upon the methodology, the sample and timing.
In this edition of MSLGROUP in India’s ‘Public Affairs Round-up’ (PAR), Sanjeev Singh, a veteran in the art of the pre-election survey, writes about its evolution in India and the science behind it. Singh, the director of the Centre for Empowerment Studies, details the challenges in India and also compares them to those faced in the US.
We also analyse the passing of the Lokpal Bill and tell stories through numbers related to the election.
This edition is part of our ‘Voice of India 2014’, an insights programme based on the Lok Sabha poll. It will include infographics, blogs, editions of PAR, and much more.
What's Next For Brand Tendulkar? - MSLGROUP InfographicAshraf Engineer
Sachin Tendulkar, India’s greatest cricketer, will play his 200th and final Test match from November 14. Tendulkar has been the most outstanding batsman since Donald Bradman in the history of the game, virtually creating the template for modern batsmanship and leading the march of Indian cricket into a new era of fearlessness and glory.
But Tendulkar is more than a cricketer, he’s an icon. He’s also one of India’s most enduring brands, with appeal across gender, age, socio-economic standing and regions.
MSLGROUP has put together an infographic that analyses what’s next for Brand Tendulkar, the opportunities that lie before him and the changes in positioning that he may bring about.
Reputation: How it is built and maintained, and the role of PR - A report by ...Ashraf Engineer
This document discusses the growing importance of reputation management for organizations and its implications for the public relations (PR) industry in India. It notes that reputation, which is based on stakeholders' perceptions, is an important intangible asset for companies that impacts business objectives. However, most companies erroneously view reputation as how they see themselves rather than how others perceive them. The document outlines how PR can play a key role in reputation management by shaping external perceptions through storytelling and content creation across online and offline mediums. It also discusses the opportunities for PR in India given increasing advertisement avoidance and need for reputation-focused communications. However, the PR industry still struggles with issues like being viewed as secondary to advertising and lack of clear communications objectives from

Public Relations in India: Inside the Industry's Mind and 2013 outlookAshraf Engineer
The public relations (PR) industry in India is witnessing a transformation. The industry is making an extra effort to be viewed as a strategic partner, and clients are acknowledging its value. With this study, we wanted to give the industry a voice.
We commissioned an India-wide survey of PR professionals and the media to share their views on a potentially tough year for business and the hottest trends that will define the industry.
A year ago, MSLGROUP India released its first industry outlook report, highlighting such critical issues as the talent crunch, the comparatively low level of PR fees, the need for strategic and integrated communications, and the core issues hidden by the wrong perception of the industry’s size. The report sparked widespread interest and provoked much needed dialogue.

E-Commerce in India: Evolution, Growth and ChallengesAshraf Engineer
E-commerce in India has grown rapidly in recent years and is expected to continue growing. Online retail revenues grew from $3.3 billion in 2009 to $6.3 billion in 2011 and are projected to reach $12 billion by 2015, catching up to the size of the online travel market. Factors driving growth include India's growing internet and smartphone usage, lower prices, and increasing comfort with online shopping among Indian consumers and businesses. However, e-commerce also faces challenges around logistics, payments, cybercrime, and expanding usage beyond major cities and among non-English speakers. Investments are helping companies address these challenges as they pursue India's large market potential.
Twenty-one years after the economic reforms began, India finds itself at a crossroads. While the global economic crisis is still a reality, growth is slowing and there is a paralysis in policy making. With the union budget around the corner, there is an urgent need to boost reforms and take radical policy decisions. Will finance minister Pranab Mukherjee deliver? Time will tell.
The public relations industry in India is at a crossroads. This report hopes to kickstart a debate on the challenges PR in India faces -- talent shortage, low retainer fees, infrastructure issues, an image problem -- so that the industry can arrive at a roadmap it so badly requires.
How Kolaveri went viral, and what marketers can learn from itAshraf Engineer
1) The song "Kolaveri Di" from the Tamil film 3 went viral on YouTube and social media in November 2011 after the unpolished studio recording was leaked online.
2) Sony Music gained the music rights and aggressively promoted the song on platforms like YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter, helping it gain over 16 million YouTube views in a month.
3) The catchy music, unconventional "Tanglish" lyrics, online sharing through hashtags and memes, and traditional media coverage all contributed to the song becoming a pan-Indian phenomenon and online sensation.

Understanding User Needs and Satisfying ThemAggregage
https://www.productmanagementtoday.com/frs/26903918/understanding-user-needs-and-satisfying-them
We know we want to create products which our customers find to be valuable. Whether we label it as customer-centric or product-led depends on how long we've been doing product management. There are three challenges we face when doing this. The obvious challenge is figuring out what our users need; the non-obvious challenges are in creating a shared understanding of those needs and in sensing if what we're doing is meeting those needs.
In this webinar, we won't focus on the research methods for discovering user-needs. We will focus on synthesis of the needs we discover, communication and alignment tools, and how we operationalize addressing those needs.
Industry expert Scott Sehlhorst will:
• Introduce a taxonomy for user goals with real world examples
• Present the Onion Diagram, a tool for contextualizing task-level goals
• Illustrate how customer journey maps capture activity-level and task-level goals
• Demonstrate the best approach to selection and prioritization of user-goals to address
• Highlight the crucial benchmarks, observable changes, in ensuring fulfillment of customer needs

a commercial phenomenon. For brand analysts, the
economics were a revelation.
But, by Season 2, the controversies were mushrooming.
The ratings dropped sooner than expected. Citing data
collated by rating agency aMap, the Economic Times
said Season 2 opened to 16.3% lower ratings compared
to the inaugural one. aMap CEO Amit Verma told the
newspaper: “Even though a larger number of viewers
watched the first two matches, the curiosity did not
sustain as much as last year.”
More serious trouble was in store. The Enforcement
Directorate began investigating allegations of ill-gotten
money flowing into the tournament from tax havens
abroad, and questioned the IPL top brass about it.
In 2010, a bigger controversy followed. Lalit Modi, the
IPL commissioner whose brainchild the tournament
was, was sacked for money laundering and favouritism
while awarding contracts, among other charges.
Scams, corruption and conflicting interests soon
became synonymous with IPL. The brand took a beating.
In 2011, the IPL’s worth was pegged at $3.67 billion,
down from a peak of $4.13 billion a year ago, reported
the Economic Times, citing a study by Brand Finance, a
UK firm specialising in brand valuations.

“The IPL juggernaut has hit a speed-breaker,” M Unni

Costs
Runaway costs are the most visible of IPL’s problems.
Team costs – players’ salaries and auction bids – hit
40%-45% of revenues in 2010. In 2009, team costs were
30%-33% of revenues.
The cost pressure is only expected to rise, further
affecting the IPL valuation.
In the first auction in 2008, there was a cap of $5 million
per franchisee on player bids. Today, it is $9 million.
Hence, franchisees have more money to spend on the
stars. Yuvraj Singh, for instance, was ‘bought’ for $1.1
million in 2008, but cost Sahara’s Pune franchise $1.8
million in the 2011 auction.
The player costs are comparable to the highest in the
world. In the NBA – an older, more established league
– the average annual salary is $2.62 million. In the
IPL, it is just under $2.5 million. The NBA leads sports
properties across the world in wages, with the IPL
coming in second.
Photo by Royal Challengers Banglore on facebook
By April 2011, as the BCCI scrambled to oust Modi and
deal with allegations of money-laundering, favouritism
and betting, it was clear that the IPL honeymoon was
over. A year later, the pressure on the brand is just as
intense.
This will be on the minds of sponsors and advertisers.
Last year, several multinationals signed on as associates.
While German car maker Volkswagen came aboard as
a partner, Pepsi inked a five-year $12.5 million deal to
be the league’s official beverage. Coca-Cola is a major
advertiser.
While all of them signed on because of the IPL’s reach,
popularity and the consumer loyalty that such a vehicle
can deliver, any damage to Brand IPL would affect the
way their marketing messages impact their consumers.
While few of them have openly voiced their concerns,
they will certainly watch viewer response and return on
investments closely.
Keeping the wage bill in check and managing revenues

Too expensive for advertisers?
MSM, which broadcasts the IPL on its channel SET Max,
has hiked ad rates by 10% for the 2012 season. This
means that advertisers must pay more than $10,000 for
a 10-second spot. Last year, after India won the World
Cup, MSM hiked rates by 25%, but the viewership was
the lowest ever.
With India’s whitewash in England and in Australia – the
team lost eight consecutive Test matches abroad – IPL 5
might pose a challenge.
While MSM has roped in Pepsi, Vodafone, Tata Photon
and Idea as sponsors, some advertisers are worried
about low returns on investment. LG Electronics India
and Godrej, which were sponsors from the inaugural
season, have pulled out this year, reported MxMIndia, a
media website.

Since IPL 4 in 2011, cricket has flooded the airwaves

It is this that would help the IPL ride out every trough.

The advertising benefit
Walk into a stadium during an IPL match or watch it on
TV, and you’ll see ads everywhere. Every conceivable
property – from billboards to the stumps – has been
monetised. Call it overkill or innovation, advertisers
know that IPL delivers eyeballs.
No wonder then that at least 84 brands advertised
aggressively on IPL 3. The number would have only
grown since then. Also, brand experts point out, the
audience is virtually captive – when Indians watch
cricket, they rarely surf channels.
From launches to building brand awareness, the IPL
has been the vehicle of choice for advertisers over
the last four years. Everybody’s found value in it, be it
little-known phone manufacturers such as Micromax
or established telecom service providers like Vodafone.
Many brands have developed campaigns especially for
Photo by IPL on facebook IPL – such as Idea (Ungli Cricket) and Pepsi (The Game).
There must be something right with a sports property
that, despite a fall in valuation, is worth more than $3.5
billion. By its second year, the IPL was thought to be the
fifth largest sports brand, just smaller than FIFA and
bigger than Wimbledon and F1. Even after the recent
setbacks, the valuation of the US’ National Football
League (NFL) – $4.5 billion – is within reach.

13. Meanwhile, others are
following suit
Experts suggest that it was IPL’s popularity that
catalysed league models in other sports. The idea is to
take the IPL model and customise it in a manner that
benefits the sport as well as investors.
It’s win-win for everyone involved. The WHS will give
200 national and international players an opportunity to
participate in 59 matches. A release by the organisers
said: “The champion team stands to win almost 30 times
more prize money as compared to the Euro Hockey
League, the leading domestic hockey league in Europe.”
In all, the organisers will give away $2 million as prize
money.
Premier League Soccer, modelled on the IPL, signed
on World Cup winner Fabio Cannavaro and French
international Robert Pires. The six-team league was due
to kick off in February, but was postponed to mid-April
after organisers struggled to secure stadiums.
The player auction on January 30, 2012, saw franchises
spend nearly $7 million. They calculated that global
football sponsors – from sportswear manufacturers to
beverages – would be keen to tap the emerging Indian
market.
While the league has run into logistical problems, the
marketing logic remains unchanged.

that you see a near-capacity crowd at a hockey match.
Interest levels are so low that during the 2010 hockey
world cup, sponsors Hero Honda used a cricketer –
Virender Sehwag – to attract fans!
However, now there is an IPL-style hockey league in India
and more are planned for other sports.
These are early days, but sponsors are looking at options
beyond cricket. For some, cricket can never deliver the
value that a less popular sport can. Title sponsors of the
ongoing World Series Hockey (WSH) are shelling out a
mere $400,000 annually for a three-year deal. Compare
that to $8 million that DLF pays to be IPL’s title sponsor
every year.
Vaibhav Sara, GM (sales and marketing), Bridgestone
India, told the Economic Times: “Even if our return on
investment from WSH is [$2 million] worth of media

in South India and its association with the Mumbai

sponsorship, it hopes, will help it break into North India,
where hockey is relatively popular.
