Dissociative identity disorder is strongly linked to severe childhood trauma such as sexual, physical, or psychological abuse. It can also be caused by an extremely frightening or unpredictable home environment, extreme stress from events like natural disasters, or accidents and torture. People with dissociative identity disorder are at increased risk of self-harm, suicide attempts, sexual and eating disorders, depression, sleep issues, anxiety, headaches, and difficulties in relationships and work due to an inability to cope with stress.
