Bouchet’s Mission
Statement
At Bouchet Math and Science
Academy, our mission begins with
the premise that all of our efforts,
resources, and talents are directed
at producing a child of the
millennium. In order to achieve
this, we realize that we will need to
accomplish three goals:
-Increase student achievement in
reading and math.
-Educate and train teachers,
paraprofessionals and parents
giving them state of the art tools
and methods.
-Acquire extra services and
resources by forming cooperative
partnerships with universities,
libraries and businesses.
Welcome
Welcome to the 2010-2011 school year at Bouchet Elementary Math & Science
Academy. The first day of school was September 7, 2010. We started the school year off
well. Students came to school in their uniforms and were eager to learn. The students,
parents, teachers and staff at Bouchet are looking forward to a rewarding school year.
Lunch Applications
Lunch applications determine how much funding our school will receive for the school
year. We encourage all parents & guardians to return all lunch forms as soon as possible.
Our goal is to obtain 100% of the forms we distributed. Lunch applications are due by
Tuesday September 28, 2010. If you child’s application is not received your child will
have to pay $2.25 for lunch. We want to receive the funding our school deserves so our
children can reap the benefit.
No School
There will be no school for students on Friday September 24, 2010 for Professional
Development Day.
International Day of Peace
On September 21, 2010 Chicago Public Schools celebrated the 32nd
anniversary of Peace
Day. Peace Day occurs annually. In 1981 The United Nations General Assembly
declared the 3rd
Tuesday of September as International Day of Peace. On September 20-
21, 2010 nine classrooms at Bouchet Math & Science Academy participated in peace day
activities. Bouchet’s students shared their thoughts and powerful words. Peace Day
activities will continue thru Thursday September 30, 2010. The resource coordinate will
contact teachers to coordinate Peace Day activities. Below is a picture of Bouchet’s
peace day board. Students and staff signed the board after they decided to commit to the
Build The Peace Pledge.
Open House
Bouchet Elementary Math & Science Academy’s open house is Thursday September 23,
2010 from 4:00pm-6:00pm. The principals, teachers and staff at Bouchet encourage all

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT
Have you ever been to the local candy store known as Sweets, Etc.? Inside you will find a variety of
sweets, smoothies and treats but also a local business that offers perils of wisdom, solace and community
development. The vision of Sweets, Etc. is to employ as many young people as possible to
build and sustain financial responsibility. As the store owner, Ms. Lavinder wants to help
and train young people for corporate employment to build more reliable and dependable
citizens within our society. To also help young people, seek new opportunities to enter
the workforce. By doing so, Sweets, Etc. has become a refuge for the people of this area,
including Bouchet. They work with Safe Passage and embrace those in need by
providing a safe haven. They are about helping young people and the community. Ms.
Lavinder commented, “I am saddened by the violence that has become a part of our area
and I want students and parents to know that our store is a safe haven for them. We
must embrace our children, support their study and work together to rebuild our
community.” She also makes it known to the young people that they cannot come in the
store cursing or being disrespectful. They demand respect and model it for their patrons.
“We cannot ignore these situations or they will consume us. We must take a stand and
teach the children and the young people because many of them don’t know the possible
dangers that are around us. Where there is a lack of knowledge, the people will parish,
that is not what we want to become of our neighborhood.” – F.Lavindar. Sweets, Etc.
opens its doors to the children of Bouchet and the South Shore Community where they
seek to make a positive difference in the community. – Faye Lavinder, Sweets, Etc.
