Botanicus.org is a freely accessible digital library created by the Missouri Botanical Garden that contains over 650,000 pages of digitized botanical literature from 1,300 volumes and 200 titles. The library aims to make historic botanical literature more accessible by applying emerging technologies like optical character recognition to digitize texts. It has digitized over 145,000 taxonomic descriptions. The digitization process involves selecting materials, preparing metadata, digitizing pages, applying optical character recognition software, and publishing the materials online for public access.
