November 5th is known as Guy Fawkes Night or Bonfire Night in England. It commemorates the foiling of the Gunpowder Plot of 1605, when Guy Fawkes and other Catholic conspirators plotted to blow up the Houses of Parliament in London. On this night, bonfires are lit and fireworks are set off, and an effigy of Guy Fawkes is burned. Children make "Guys" to burn on the bonfires, and go from door to door saying rhymes and asking for "penny for the Guy".
