Olmsted Falls High School
WHAT is a Bond
WHO does this benefit?
Bond (in layman's terms)
A bond generates money for large (typically
construction based) projects. Similar to a
building loan of a house.
Who benefits from ISSUE 86: Bond Levy
ALL 2016 graduates (and on) of Olmsted
Falls High School. A community that prizes
students’ and staff’s safety.
Overcrowding at the
High School?
Olmsted Falls High School was built for 850
students.
High School is now home to 1,200 students.
By 2018, enrollment at the high school will
be nearly double what is was built to serve.
Overcrowding
Puts Tradition of Safety at Risk
Modular (trailer) Classrooms designed to
band-aide overcrowding now serving over
900 students daily.
This increase of modular usage is leading to
door security being compromised, and
increase risk of crowds of students passing
between building.
Overcrowding
Puts Tradition of Safety at Risk
Participation in programs, enrollment, and
general use pushing safe occupancy in music
room, and common areas to safe tipping point.
Short and overcrowded lunch periods rolling
throughout the day to accommodate what space
cannot.
Lack of storage for music and other programs is
creating hallway evacuation hazards.
How Were these Risks Identified?
Independent security firm conducted a
study in 2012.
What Will this Bond Do?
Build 9 classrooms within the main high
school building.
Upgrade safety and surveillance technology.
Construct and expand spaces such as
cafeteria and band/choir rooms.
Construction of 9 Classrooms
Allows for removal of the modular
trailers and keeps all the students
INSIDE the main building all day,
every day.
Safety & Surveillance Upgrades
Updated security system
 Access control system (internal and
external cameras)—currently there are no
internal cameras
 Panic alarms
 Better lock down capabilities

Expand Band/Choir Room: Current space
is 4,794 sq. ft. Several thousand sq. ft. less
than adequate for occupancy.
 Eliminate equipment in halls that
creates safety issues
 Ability to add appropriate exits in case
of emergency
Construct / Expand Spaces II
Expand/repurpose cafeteria space:
Current configuration has this largely
populated area as the first spot upon entry.
 Enable state recommended three
lunch periods vs. six.
 Reduce hallway and evacuation safety risks
caused by overcrowding.
Total Cost of Project

Editor's Notes

  • #2 Thank you all for allowing me to take a few moments of your evening. For those of you that do not know me, I am Steve Schwecke. I have lived in the District for a little of 10 years, have 4 children (one a Freshman in college, a 4th grader, a 3rd grader and finally one in pre-school). I asked to help give these presentations because I am just like most of you. I do not work at a school or sit on the Board or am running for the Board… nor am I a trained public speaker. I am a husband, dad and taxpayer. We have a home in Villages of Lakeside that meets our needs, but manage to get by on my single salary. Sound familiar to you? I also wanted to give my perspective of why this Bond is so important and the chance to share my opinion, in person, as to why I feel you should feel the same. I also want you to leave here having heard the facts asked your questions and feeling comfortable to plan to vote ‘Yes’. Plus I want you to feel as I do so that you will advocate others to vote “Yes”.
  • #3 For me, I get confused with all these different Levy names. So I want to start out by laying this out the way that my ‘Schwecke’ brain can understand. A Bond is used to generate money for BIG and SPECIFIC projects. I look at it as taking a loan out for building a house. You get the money, you start doing the work and you pay it back over 30 years. So in this case, this Bond will be used ONLY for the needs of the High School that will benefit students today as well as any student that will walk those hallowed halls some day. This WILL be the High School for all Olmsted Falls students.
  • #5 So why now? Why is this important Steve? What are the problems? Today those big modular trailers you see as you walk into the High School house eight classrooms. Eight classrooms equates to 150 students at one time sitting outside of the building in trailers PLUS moving to and from the building each class period all day, every day! We all know of the horrible atrocities that have occurred in recent history. It pains me think back to those days and remember thinking “My god, what if that was us. What would I do.? Well folks, that could be us. Today, the systems and technology present in this school isn’t good enough. We need to demand and want better. Finally, now that I’ve spoken about all the well covered big scary stuff, look at just the day in and day out safety concerns due to overcrowding. This building is 43 years old and Olmsted Falls has grown just a tad (sarcasm). It does not meet the demand (space) of the clients (students) of today. Ever try to cram 35 people into one elevator door? Yea, doesn’t work too well does it? That is what these specific large gathering areas look like every day, all day long.
  • #7 While you, me, people of the community may see these safety and security risks, we aren’t pros at it right? How do I really know that is so bad? In 2012 a professional company was brought in to assess the current safety and security risks. THIS IS WHAT THEY DO for a living! The items mentioned on the previous slide were the areas the pros said needed to be fixed! So I take they professional opinion with even higher regard than my own feelings.
  • #8 So what needs to be done
