If Dr. Strangelove brought social satire into the mainstream, Citizen Kane
pioneered political consciousness, Roshomon deconstructed the myth of
authentic observation, Dekalog tweaked social mores, One flew over a cuckoo's
nest overturned insanity on its head, and Kill Bill celebrated the aesthetics of gut-
spilling revenge, then there exists ONLY ONE Hindi movie that pays tribute to all
these traditions without compromising on the inheritance of a typically Indian
narration.

Built by MGM in 1938, the theatre initially screened only the studio’s
productions, but it was always the city’s favourite. Old-timers recall how, for the
premiere of Chandni in 1989, Yash Chopra had stalls selling
bangles, parandis and other Punjabi wedding paraphernalia in the foyer, while
for crime flick Khalnayak (1993), Subhash Ghai turned the space into a prison –
and the turnout was so massive that riot police had to be pulled in. and in 2006,
It reopened under the Adlabs aegis, with six screens. Still, it wasn’t enough.
Today, more than a decade later, the grand Art Deco cinema house will open its
doors to the city’s moviegoers in yet another avatar, as a shiny, glitzy INOX.

The Jatakas are ancient tales, narrated to present the teachings of Gautam Buddha in a
simplified manner. It is believed that the Buddha himself narrated these teachings to
his disciples who, in turn, narrated them to the common people they encountered on
their travels.
In this particular story, the banyan deer is a golden deer and the leader of his herd who
steps into the execution altar to save a mother deer from being sacrificed for a human
king who loves to hunt. His compassion pleases the king, who not only lets the banyan
deer go, but also spares the lives of all the deer.
The X chose this particular story of the movie, perhaps in keeping with the moral values
inherent in the story. Besides, Buddhism was after all rooted in India and the country
boasted a long-standing legacy of exquisite art and heritage, which offered a wealth of
inspiration for the team.
