This document discusses a program called Big Data for Small Places that aims to build data access and analysis capacity in rural municipalities and organizations. The program would form working groups around topics like transportation, recreation, and community well-being. These groups would receive coaching and training over 20-24 hours of in-class sessions with experts to learn how to find, analyze, and apply data to address local issues and opportunities. The goal is to help rural communities make more evidence-based decisions and reduce their reliance on outside consultants by developing internal data skills. The program is being piloted and the authors are looking to expand its availability and recruit facilitators.
