BMGT 496 Wk 1 R. HALL initial post:
The word Ethics, we hear it make us think of a set of standards
such as rights, obligations, fairness, responsibilities, and
specific virtues like honesty and loyalty. These standards can
sometimes be unwritten rules that are necessary for human to
live and interact with each other. (Lumen, n.d). Business Ethics
follows the same standards but in a slightly different way.
Business Ethics is defined to be a set of morals, ethical believes
that direct the values, the behaviors, and the decisions of a
business as a whole which includes the leadership and the
employees. A company’s leadership ethics can direct how the
company runs on a daily basis; the leadership can lead the
employees by example by making decisions that are not only
beneficial to the employees but also to the entire company.
(Horton, 2020). The Ethical leadership of a company have an
effect on the employees, when the leadership is guiding the
employees in an ethical behavior, the employees follow their
leads by working in an honest and loyal way. And this can
increase productivity, morale, and lower turnover rate. (Horton,
2020). The Business ethics play a crucial role in an
organization’s culture, the organizational culture refers to the
values, visible artefacts, and rituals that shape the behaviors of
employees within an organization. Therefore, it may be
considered as the glue that holds together members of an
organization. If a company wants to develop a top-notch ethics
and compliance programs, it must start with a positive culture
of integrity. (Deloitte, n.d). The culture of integrity is
characterized by the organizational values, the tone at the top
meaning the leadership and senior managers push the employees
and the business partners to adopt an ethical behavior;
incentives and rewards, accountability, comfort of speaking up
and procedural justice. Organizations with strong positive
cultures create trusting relationships with stakeholders, it can
also lead to a long-term sustainability of a company. (Deloitte,
n.d).

BMGT 364 Wk 8 S. GARDNER initial post:
1. Pandemic: Major Effects on Planning for Smithfield Custom
Furniture Company
Planning is the "process of setting goals and defining the
actions required to achieve the goals" (Lumen Learning, n.d.-e).
The pandemic will cause Smithfield to reevaluate their goals
and create new ones. Then, a plan of action will need to be
established to reach these goals for the year.
Pandemic: Most Significant Planning Action for Company
The most significant planning action the company will need to
take to ensure its survival is to evaluate alternatives. Since it is
unknown what is to come with the pandemic, it is important to
be flexible. Evaluating alternatives will identify multiple ways
to achieve goals and how difficult it would be to implement
them. Managers can get ideas and input from others as
"different perspectives can provide different solutions" (Lumen
Learning, n.d.-f).
2. Pandemic: Major Effects on Organizing for Smithfield
Custom Furniture Company
The organizing function is where management coordinates and
combines the resources of the organization to complete the
goals set out in the planning stage. This pandemic will directly
impact the external environment. The external environment
"consists of everything outside of organizations that can affect
their performance and outcomes" (Lumen Learning, n.d.-c).
This can be anything from new government mandates to
suppliers slowing down production. Smithfield won't have any
control over these things but they will directly affect them.
Pandemic: Most Significant Organizing Action for Company
The most significant organizing action the company will need to
take to ensure its survival is to collaborate. Collaboration
requires "all the key leaders, managers, and employees to
collaborate in an attempt to create a better structure" (Lumen
Learning, n.d.-c). Smithfield will need to collaborate with all
levels and problem-solve together.
3. Pandemic: Major Effects on Leading for Smithfield Custom
Furniture Company
The pandemic will test the leaders and managers of Smithfield.
It is said that "the greatest success comes when strong
leadership is paired with effective management" (Lumen
Learning, n.d.-d). The pandemic will force managers will need
to adapt to change quickly and well as help the employees to
adapt as well. If the manager isn't a great leader, this could
result in employees feeling neglected and lost.
Pandemic: Most Significant Leading Action for Company
The most significant leading action the company will need to
take to ensure its survival is communicating. The company will
face many obstacles throughout the pandemic and it's essential
for there to be open communication as it provides clarity, build
relationships, defines expectations, and creates commitment.
When communication isn't clear, it can lead to confusion and
misinformation. Leaders and managers must be "able to receive
accurate information to determine plans, and they must be able
to send accurate information for the plans to be implemented"
(Lumen Learning, n.d.-a).
4. Pandemic: Major Effects on Controlling for Smithfield
Custom Furniture Company
Control means "means guiding the activities, employees, and
processes of an organization to reach goals, prevent errors, and
abide by the law" (Lumen Learning, n.d.-b). With the pandemic,
remote working will be very likely for Smithfield. Smithfield
may find it harder to guide the processes and employees while
not being in person.
Pandemic: Most Significant Controlling Action for Company
The most significant controlling action the company will need
to take to ensure its survival is to implementing organizational
control. Implementing control "involves developing rules,
procedures, or other protocols for directing the work of
employees and processes as well as monitoring the work"
(Lumen Learning, n.d.-b). Creating these rules and procedures
for remote work will help everyone get on the same page and
know what is expected. It will be a new experience for everyone
so having these rules and expectations will help people feel
more at ease.

BMGT 496 Wk 1 K. LIN initial post:
Ethics contrasts between what's right and wrong, good and evil,
virtuous and non-virtuous. In terms relating to business, it's the
study of how businesses and individuals define and construct
values and moral beliefs when conducting business. When I
think of the word ethics, I also think about morals. Though they
relate to the conduct of right vs wrong, ethics is a system
determined by outside social groups, while morals are personal
principles shaped by experiences, environment, culture, and
religion. When it comes to business ethics, there are a set of
ethical principles we go by, but how we choose to react within
those principles is reflected in our morals. Being that business
ethics is normative, during business operations it sets a standard
for those to follow, ethics is applied in making business
decisions, building customer and partner relationships,
enhancing company reputations, and enforces positive
behaviors. The connection of a company's culture reflects off of
descriptive ethics, which is the actual actions taking place
behind normative ethics.
BMGT 496 Wk 3 K. ROWLAND initial post:
Employee Bill of Rights
An employee shall have the right to a work environment free of
discrimination due to age, gender, race, etc.
An employee shall have the right to a work environment that is
safe and in code with current OSHA regulations.
An employee shall have the right to reserving their position
during family and disability related leaves.
An employee shall have the right to time off based on the hours
worked in a calendar year.
An employee shall have the right to insurance through the
company if they work full time.
A BFOQ is a "defense to acknowledged discrimination, usually
based on the existence of a facially discriminatory policy, such
as "individuals over the age of 50 shall not be hired as police
officers" (2002). This is a loophole of sorts for companies to
use in order to make sense of their discriminatory actions.

BMGT 364 Wk 8 R. FREEMAN initial post:
Also, the most robust business strategies would need to be
tweaked in the face of COVID-19. Companies take calculated
steps to protect workers and reduce financial and operational
risk. To endorse unprecedented levels of remote working and
online trading while surviving an upsurge in cyberattacks,
businesses must ensure that workers are as protected as
possible, secure financial sustainability, evaluate supply chain
resilience, and strengthen critical systems.
Planning
The organization must make proactive cost-cutting decisions
based on the evolving needs of its customers. Since many
workers work from home and businesses have realized they can
be just as effective remotely, the forecasted furniture
manufacturing is a fair field to cut. It is possible to apply the
ramifications of online shopping. When it comes to marketing
touchpoints, more people are shopping online and browsing
social media than ever before.
Organizing
Immediate changes were made, as well as the possible effect of
the virus on workers. navigate the new standard when taking
advantage of some of the improvements and opportunities that
the landscape has to bring. Companies that sell primarily
through conventional distribution networks and/or brick-and-
mortar stores have been hit hard by the impact. Consumers are
more dependent on the digital world than ever before, and
companies are being forced to change their strategies and
transition toward digital transformation with much greater
urgency than ever before.
Leading
The pandemic shutdown started, but when people began to
purchase desks and upgrade their living spaces, the company's
profits must have improved. To keep up with the increased
demand, the business will need to enter the eCommerce market,
which will allow it to capitalize on the fact that the pandemic
has driven up demand for furniture sales, which are usually seen
in physical stores. Adaptability needs the ability to make
choices and take action. Meet with related staff, either remotely
or in person, to explore realistic scenarios for terminating plans
or goods that are no longer viable.
Controlling
Make the most of the company's existing resources, provide
long-term growth, and support a long-term business model To
meet clients, concentrate on online marketing. Make the most of
the opportunities at your disposal. Incorporate the World Health
Organization's new and updated workplace safety guidelines,
promote remote working, account for workforce versatility, and
rely on your network.
Explanation:
Most companies are finding it difficult to keep their financial
wheels spinning during the lockdown. Unfortunately, the effect
on startups and small companies may be much more serious
since they have fewer cash reserves and a limited margin for
coping with unforeseen downturns.

Case Discussion: Smithfield Custom Furniture (Part 4
Conclusion)
This case discussion continues with the Smithfield Furniture
Company. (You may desire to briefly review the facts provided
to you in Discussions 1—3 to address this week’s discussion.)
It is now April 1, 2020. The 2015 purchase of You Figure it Out
was culminated and the planned integration of their
manufacturing and sales, as described in Discussion 3, fully
completed.
The company now has 411 stores and 24,000 employees. 344 of
the 411 retail outlets all sell the upscale and moderately priced
lines; 51 retail outlets (Texas (6), California (13), New York
(15), Nevada (4), Florida (9), and North Carolina (4)) sell only
the You Figure it Out brand. These 51 stores employ 2,000 of
the 24,000 workers.
There are 16 stores overseas, Spain (4), France (4), Germany
(4), and England (4), that sell all 3 product lines. These stores
employ 1,000 workers. Half of these employees work in the
retail stores and the other half work at various seaports in their
countries receiving furniture and delivering the furniture
produced in the US to various stores and customers.
In 2015, Margot Smithfield and the 12-member board of
directors purchased You Figure it Out, a moderately profitable
51 store chain of ultra-modern furniture. The furniture and
furniture-related accessories of You Figure it Out were all made
in China, but with the 2015 acquisition, all furniture is
manufactured at 1 of the 5 furniture manufacturing plants in the
United States. Their retail stores are located in Texas (6),
California (13), New York (15), Nevada (4), Florida (9), and
North Carolina (4).
2019 Gross Sales (all product lines) $1.6 Billion US. 2019 Net
Profit $440 Million April 30, 2020 (Cash Reserves) $2.8
Billion
60% of sales, gross revenues, and expenses are associated with
the upscale product line. 25% of sales, gross revenues, and
expenses are associated with the You Figure it Out product line.
15% of sales, gross revenues, and expenses are associated with
overseas outlets. In other words, for the purpose of this case
activity, all 3 product lines are proportional in terms of revenue
and expenses.
The Management Issue: Presently, it is believed that as early as
March 2020, the possibility exists for the company to be in the
throes of a worldwide rapidly spreading, high contagious,
debilitating, and often fatal viral pandemic. The company must
plan for this eventuality to occur.
Your Task for Your Initial Post
Margot Smithfield has requested you, based on the course
materials you have studied the past seven weeks related to
Planning, Organizing, Leading, and Controlling, to briefly
discuss (supported by course materials. in-text citations, and
references) the major impact this pandemic will have on
Smithfield Custom Furniture's Planning, Organizing, Leading
and Controlling functions. You can assume a vaccine will be
available and distributed worldwide 18 months from the start of
the pandemic.
After you have discussed the major impact the pandemic will
have on the company's Planning, Organizing, Leading, and
Controlling functions, you must indicate for each of those
functions the most significant action the company will need to
take to ensure its survival, assuming the pandemic's effects will
last 18 months.
Format for Your Initial Post
You must use the exact numbers and their corresponding
headings for each of your initial post. You are required to use
when appropriate in-text citations and a reference list.

Discussion #1
Keeping It Reale
Recent events of employee dissatisfaction and general staff
upheaval are threatening the continued operations of Giggle,
Inc., a large internet search company, and management believes
that a strong employee bill of rights would be a positive step to
address the turmoil. I.M. Reale, the new senior executive vice-
president for human resources for the Company has been tasked
with the responsibility of developing a new employee bill of
rights. Because he is rather clueless as to how to approach this
assignment, he has called you in as a consultant (actually he
wants you to do all the drafting but be sure he gets the credit).
Using the reading, “Examples of Ethical Issues in Business”,
embedded here as an initial frame of reference, develop the
employee bill of rights (“BOR”). What would such a document
look like? I.M. Reale, the consummate professional that he is,
has left you with the following instructions:
1) make sure the bill of rights is clear and practical and not
theoretical;
2) it should use negative injunctions that are more precise than
“you should” statements; (think of negative injunction in terms
of something that should not happen). I think there are a couple
of ways you could phrase your bill of rights provisions. For
example:
"An employee shall not be discriminated against in the
workplace because of age, gender, religion or disability." (This
would be an example of a negative injunction description).
You could also state the provision as:
"An employee shall have the right to a workplace environment
free of discrimination based on age, gender, religion or
disability."
3) it should be written in lay language (none of that legal
mumbo jumbo—I think he has a strong dislike for lawyers—
imagine that);
4) it should be succinct; and
5) it needs to be enforceable and not dependent on goodwill to
work.
http://smallbusiness.chron.com/examples-ethical-issues-
business-24464.html
Just as you are putting the finishing touches on the BOR, you
make the mistake of taking a call from I.M. Reale, who in a
panic asks you if you know what a bona fide occupational
qualification (“BFOQ”) is because his boss asked him, and he
has no clue. I.M. Reale asks if you can include in the BOR
project a short explanation of what the term BFOQ means.

Discussion #1
Ethics: A Personal Perspective
How we perceive ethical issues and how we expect others to act
is in many respects a reflection of our personal views.
Considering the importance of our internal views of ethics,
think about the following scenario:
You have been recently hired in the human resources
department at the company you have always dreamed of
working for. At the end of your first day, your manager, I. M.
DeBoss, on her way out of the office says to you: “So Mr./Ms.
Jones, what things come to mind when you think of the word
“ethics”? Before you can answer, she asks you if you believe
ethics are important for a company, and if so, why do you feel
that way? Not letting up, because she is DeBoss, she then tells
you that she once had a conversation with someone who
mentioned that ethics might be a reflection of the culture of a
business, but she has no idea what this means. She asks if you
could help her understand the connection between ethics and a
company's culture.
Just as you are about to respond to her, she says “I am sorry
Mr./Ms. Jones, I really have to run, but I want to continue our
conversation tomorrow.” You are relieved because you will
have a night to ponder her questions and wow her with your
responses tomorrow. How would you respond to your manager?
Be certain to include in your response for Ms. DeBoss a
definition of business ethics.

These standards can
  • 2. sometimes be unwritten rules that are necessary for human to live and interact with each other. (Lumen, n.d). Business Ethics follows the same standards but in a slightly different way. Business Ethics is defined to be a set of morals, ethical believes that direct the values, the behaviors, and the decisions of a business as a whole which includes the leadership and the employees. A company’s leadership ethics can direct how the company runs on a daily basis; the leadership can lead the employees by example by making decisions that are not only beneficial to the employees but also to the entire company. (Horton, 2020). The Ethical leadership of a company have an effect on the employees, when the leadership is guiding the employees in an ethical behavior, the employees follow their leads by working in an honest and loyal way. And this can increase productivity, morale, and lower turnover rate. (Horton, 2020). The Business ethics play a crucial role in an organization’s culture, the organizational culture refers to the values, visible artefacts, and rituals that shape the behaviors of employees within an organization. Therefore, it may be considered as the glue that holds together members of an organization. If a company wants to develop a top-notch ethics and compliance programs, it must start with a positive culture of integrity. (Deloitte, n.d). The culture of integrity is characterized by the organizational values, the tone at the top meaning the leadership and senior managers push the employees and the business partners to adopt an ethical behavior; incentives and rewards, accountability, comfort of speaking up and procedural justice. Organizations with strong positive cultures create trusting relationships with stakeholders, it can also lead to a long-term sustainability of a company. (Deloitte, n.d). References: Deloitte, (n.d). Pandemic: Major Effects on Planning for Smithfield Custom Furniture Company Planning is the "process of setting goals and defining the actions required to achieve the goals" (Lumen Learning, n.d.-e). The pandemic will cause Smithfield to reevaluate their goals and create new ones. Then, a plan of action will need to be established to reach these goals for the year. Pandemic: Most Significant Planning Action for Company The most significant planning action the company will need to take to ensure its survival is to evaluate alternatives. Since it is unknown what is to come with the pandemic, it is important to be flexible. Evaluating alternatives will identify multiple ways to achieve goals and how difficult it would be to implement them. Managers can get ideas and input from others as "different perspectives can provide different solutions" (Lumen Learning, n.d.-f). 2. Pandemic: Major Effects on Organizing for Smithfield Custom Furniture Company
  • 4. The organizing function is where management coordinates and combines the resources of the organization to complete the goals set out in the planning stage. This pandemic will directly impact the external environment. The external environment "consists of everything outside of organizations that can affect their performance and outcomes" (Lumen Learning, n.d.-c). This can be anything from new government mandates to suppliers slowing down production. Smithfield won't have any control over these things but they will directly affect them. Pandemic: Most Significant Organizing Action for Company The most significant organizing action the company will need to take to ensure its survival is to collaborate. Collaboration requires "all the key leaders, managers, and employees to collaborate in an attempt to create a better structure" (Lumen Learning, n.d.-c). Smithfield will need to collaborate with all levels and problem-solve together. 3. Pandemic: Major Effects on Leading for Smithfield Custom Furniture Company The pandemic will test the leaders and managers of Smithfield. It is said that "the greatest success comes when strong leadership is paired with effective management" (Lumen Learning, n.d.-d). The pandemic will force managers will need to adapt to change quickly and well as help the employees to adapt as well. If the manager isn't a great leader, this could result in employees feeling neglected and lost. Pandemic: Most Significant Leading Action for Company The most significant leading action the company will need to take to ensure its survival is communicating. The company will face many obstacles throughout the pandemic and it's essential for there to be open communication as it provides clarity, build relationships, defines expectations, and creates commitment. When communication isn't clear, it can lead to confusion and misinformation. Leaders and managers must be "able to receive accurate information to determine plans, and they must be able to send accurate information for the plans to be implemented" (Lumen Learning, n.d.-a).
  • 5. 4. Pandemic: Major Effects on Controlling for Smithfield Custom Furniture Company Control means "means guiding the activities, employees, and processes of an organization to reach goals, prevent errors, and abide by the law" (Lumen Learning, n.d.-b). With the pandemic, remote working will be very likely for Smithfield. Smithfield may find it harder to guide the processes and employees while not being in person. Pandemic: Most Significant Controlling Action for Company The most significant controlling action the company will need to take to ensure its survival is to implementing organizational control. Implementing control "involves developing rules, procedures, or other protocols for directing the work of employees and processes as well as monitoring the work" (Lumen Learning, n.d.-b). Creating these rules and procedures for remote work will help everyone get on the same page and know what is expected. It will be a new experience for everyone so having these rules and expectations will help people feel more at ease. References Lumen Learning. (n.d.-a). LIN initial post: Ethics contrasts between what's right and wrong, good and evil, virtuous and non-virtuous. In terms relating to business, it's the study of how businesses and individuals define and construct values and moral beliefs when conducting business. When I think of the word ethics, I also think about morals. Though they relate to the conduct of right vs wrong, ethics is a system determined by outside social groups, while morals are personal principles shaped by experiences, environment, culture, and religion. When it comes to business ethics, there are a set of ethical principles we go by, but how we choose to react within those principles is reflected in our morals. Being that business ethics is normative, during business operations it sets a standard for those to follow, ethics is applied in making business decisions, building customer and partner relationships, enhancing company reputations, and enforces positive behaviors. The connection of a company's culture reflects off of descriptive ethics, which is the actual actions taking place behind normative ethics.
  • 7. BMGT 496 Wk 3 K. ROWLAND initial post: Employee Bill of Rights An employee shall have the right to a work environment free of discrimination due to age, gender, race, etc. An employee shall have the right to a work environment that is safe and in code with current OSHA regulations. An employee shall have the right to reserving their position during family and disability related leaves. An employee shall have the right to time off based on the hours worked in a calendar year. An employee shall have the right to insurance through the company if they work full time. A BFOQ is a "defense to acknowledged discrimination, usually based on the existence of a facially discriminatory policy, such as "individuals over the age of 50 shall not be hired as police officers" (2002). This is a loophole of sorts for companies to use in order to make sense of their discriminatory actions. References: Leonard, K. (2020, July 14). Examples of Ethical Issues in Business. • 8. Also, the most robust business strategies would need to be tweaked in the face of COVID-19. Companies take calculated steps to protect workers and reduce financial and operational risk. To endorse unprecedented levels of remote working and online trading while surviving an upsurge in cyberattacks, businesses must ensure that workers are as protected as possible, secure financial sustainability, evaluate supply chain resilience, and strengthen critical systems. Planning The organization must make proactive cost-cutting decisions based on the evolving needs of its customers. Since many workers work from home and businesses have realized they can be just as effective remotely, the forecasted furniture manufacturing is a fair field to cut. It is possible to apply the ramifications of online shopping. When it comes to marketing touchpoints, more people are shopping online and browsing social media than ever before. Organizing Immediate changes were made, as well as the possible effect of the virus on workers. navigate the new standard when taking advantage of some of the improvements and opportunities that the landscape has to bring. Companies that sell primarily through conventional distribution networks and/or brick-and- mortar stores have been hit hard by the impact. Consumers are more dependent on the digital world than ever before, and companies are being forced to change their strategies and transition toward digital transformation with much greater urgency than ever before. • 9. The pandemic shutdown started, but when people began to purchase desks and upgrade their living spaces, the company's profits must have improved. To keep up with the increased demand, the business will need to enter the eCommerce market, which will allow it to capitalize on the fact that the pandemic has driven up demand for furniture sales, which are usually seen in physical stores. Adaptability needs the ability to make choices and take action. Meet with related staff, either remotely or in person, to explore realistic scenarios for terminating plans or goods that are no longer viable. Controlling Make the most of the company's existing resources, provide long-term growth, and support a long-term business model To meet clients, concentrate on online marketing. Make the most of the opportunities at your disposal. Incorporate the World Health Organization's new and updated workplace safety guidelines, promote remote working, account for workforce versatility, and rely on your network. Explanation: Most companies are finding it difficult to keep their financial wheels spinning during the lockdown. Unfortunately, the effect on startups and small companies may be much more serious since they have fewer cash reserves and a limited margin for coping with unforeseen downturns. • 11. Case Discussion: Smithfield Custom Furniture (Part 4 Conclusion) This case discussion continues with the Smithfield Furniture Company. (You may desire to briefly review the facts provided to you in Discussions 1—3 to address this week’s discussion.) It is now April 1, 2020. The 2015 purchase of You Figure it Out was culminated and the planned integration of their manufacturing and sales, as described in Discussion 3, fully completed. The company now has 411 stores and 24,000 employees. 344 of the 411 retail outlets all sell the upscale and moderately priced lines; 51 retail outlets (Texas (6), California (13), New York (15), Nevada (4), Florida (9), and North Carolina (4)) sell only the You Figure it Out brand. These 51 stores employ 2,000 of the 24,000 workers. There are 16 stores overseas, Spain (4), France (4), Germany (4), and England (4), that sell all 3 product lines. These stores employ 1,000 workers. Half of these employees work in the retail stores and the other half work at various seaports in their countries receiving furniture and delivering the furniture produced in the US to various stores and customers. In 2015, Margot Smithfield and the 12-member board of directors purchased You Figure it Out, a moderately profitable 51 store chain of ultra-modern furniture. The furniture and furniture-related accessories of You Figure it Out were all made in China, but with the 2015 acquisition, all furniture is manufactured at 1 of the 5 furniture manufacturing plants in the United States. Their retail stores are located in Texas (6), California (13), New York (15), Nevada (4), Florida (9), and North Carolina (4).

In other words, for the purpose of this case activity, all 3 product lines are proportional in terms of revenue and expenses. The Management Issue: Presently, it is believed that as early as March 2020, the possibility exists for the company to be in the throes of a worldwide rapidly spreading, high contagious, debilitating, and often fatal viral pandemic. The company must plan for this eventuality to occur. Your Task for Your Initial Post Margot Smithfield has requested you, based on the course materials you have studied the past seven weeks related to Planning, Organizing, Leading, and Controlling, to briefly discuss (supported by course materials. in-text citations, and references) the major impact this pandemic will have on Smithfield Custom Furniture's Planning, Organizing, Leading and Controlling functions. I.M. Reale, the new senior executive vice- president for human resources for the Company has been tasked with the responsibility of developing a new employee bill of rights. Because he is rather clueless as to how to approach this assignment, he has called you in as a consultant (actually he wants you to do all the drafting but be sure he gets the credit). Using the reading, “Examples of Ethical Issues in Business”, embedded here as an initial frame of reference, develop the employee bill of rights (“BOR”). What would such a document look like? I.M. Reale, the consummate professional that he is, has left you with the following instructions: 1) make sure the bill of rights is clear and practical and not theoretical; 2) it should use negative injunctions that are more precise than “you should” statements; (think of negative injunction in terms of something that should not happen). I think there are a couple of ways you could phrase your bill of rights provisions. For example: "An employee shall not be discriminated against in the workplace because of age, gender, religion or disability." (This would be an example of a negative injunction description). You could also state the provision as: "An employee shall have the right to a workplace environment free of discrimination based on age, gender, religion or disability." 3) it should be written in lay language (none of that legal mumbo jumbo—I think he has a strong dislike for lawyers— imagine that);
  • 15. 4) it should be succinct; and 5) it needs to be enforceable and not dependent on goodwill to work. http://smallbusiness.chron.com/examples-ethical-issues- business-24464.html Just as you are putting the finishing touches on the BOR, you make the mistake of taking a call from I.M. Reale, who in a panic asks you if you know what a bona fide occupational qualification (“BFOQ”) is because his boss asked him, and he has no clue. I.M. Reale asks if you can include in the BOR project a short explanation of what the term BFOQ means. Instructions: Review "Weekly Discussions/Participation" and related topics in the Syllabus, and the “About Discussions" module under Content in preparing your responses. Discussion #1 Ethics: A Personal Perspective How we perceive ethical issues and how we expect others to act is in many respects a reflection of our personal views. Considering the importance of our internal views of ethics, think about the following scenario: You have been recently hired in the human resources department at the company you have always dreamed of working for. At the end of your first day, your manager, I. M. DeBoss, on her way out of the office says to you: “So Mr./Ms. Jones, what things come to mind when you think of the word “ethics”? Before you can answer, she asks you if you believe ethics are important for a company, and if so, why do you feel that way? Not letting up, because she is DeBoss, she then tells you that she once had a conversation with someone who mentioned that ethics might be a reflection of the culture of a business, but she has no idea what this means. She asks if you could help her understand the connection between ethics and a company's culture.
  • 16. Just as you are about to respond to her, she says “I am sorry Mr./Ms. Jones, I really have to run, but I want to continue our conversation tomorrow.” You are relieved because you will have a night to ponder her questions and wow her with your responses tomorrow. How would you respond to your manager? Be certain to include in your response for Ms. DeBoss a definition of business ethics.
