• History:
o Founded on February 1st, 1968 in Illinois
o Started with 171 members
o Publications began to occur in the 1970’s with Annals
of Biomedical Engineering (AMBE) journal in 1971
and the BMES Bulletin in 1977
• Student Chapters
o Includes over 100 nationally and internationally
acclaimed universities
o Big names such as Harvard, MIT, Rice, Boston U, etc.
• Now boasts 6,500 members

Vision
• The Vision of the Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES) is to serve
as the world's leading society of professionals devoted to
developing and using engineering and technology to advance
human health and well-being.
Mission
• The Mission of the BMES is to build and support the biomedical
engineering community, locally, nationally and internationally, with
activities designed to communicate recent advances, discoveries,
and inventions; promote education and professional development;
and integrate the perspectives of the academic, medical,
governmental, and business sectors.

5. • The Binghamton Bioengineers (BBE) is an organization created
in 2004 with the following mission:
o Promote the development of professionalism inside and outside
the classroom by creating networking opportunities between
students, faculty, and outside organizations as well as building the
confidence and skills necessary to tackle problems in the
academic and professional setting.
o Become a self-sustaining system through the events and services
provided to the students and community.
• The Binghamton Bioengineers aim to expose students to the
various professional pathways available for bioengineers
through exposure to university resources and individuals while
also engaging in entertainment and service-based endeavors.

7. BBE and BMES Merge
• In the fall of 2013, the Binghamton Bioengineers accrued
enough student memberships in the national BMES
organization to found a student chapter on the SUNY
Binghamton campus.
• Actively seeking new members to join BMES and the
Binghamton student chapter
• Annual Membership Fee: $30
• Various Membership benefits: http://bmes.org/membership
• You do NOT need a BMES membership in order to participate in
the student organization;
o However, joining the organization grants you access to an
abundance of resources and Resume material
