Presentation on the World Resources Forum, 23-24.10.2019
Improvement strategies for e-waste management in countries like Ghana require the buy-in of the informal sector. In that context, an incentive-based approach was developed and tested. It aims at motivating informal collectors and recyclers to refrain from polluting practices such as the open burning of cables. During the 10-month field test in Agbogbloshie, Ghana, informal players could deliver unburned waste cables to a handover center and received a monetary compensated above the local scrap value of embedded materials.
The test was conducted on close co-operation with local organizations and within the framework of the GIZ project “Environmentally sound disposal and recycling of e-waste in Ghana”. This contributing presents main findings and describes lessons-learned regarding acceptance from informal sector players, organizational issues and the potential embedding in future e-waste management strategies. Engineering creates opportunity from waste Connie Linder
Connie Linder & Tre Trefethen. Published in Business in Vancouver, Mar 5, 2013
Canadian households generate nearly 13 million tonnes of waste every year, more waste per capita than any of our peer countries, even the US. Recycling programs reduce a small portion of garbage that goes into landfills, but the trash keeps piling up and so has the cost of managing that waste: Canadian taxpayers spent a total of $2.6 billion in 2008 on waste management.

According to a recent Kellogg Foundation report, if an organization builds a culture that systematically supports innovation, the ideas will come. The key is to be deliberate, open to ideas from anywhere, comfortable with unpredictability, and generous in sharing learnings – all great approaches to building a social infrastructure for youth organizing and engagement in Ontario. Young people are already making significant contributions to their communities, and now is the time to sustain and increase that activity.
In March 2009, OTF partnered with the Laidlaw Foundation and Tides Canada to create the conditions that would allow youth-led and youth-serving organizations to connect with each other, share resources and develop new knowledge and practices. 50 young people from diverse sectors and groups agreed on the need for a coordinated provincial model, but where they go from there is deliberately unplanned. No required changes have been identified up front, and no expected outcomes have been proposed. The only certainty is that a strong foundation is being built for future generations. Work through a fascinating case study on this unique process to find out more about:
- the five stages of intentional innovation;
- thinking big and trusting to “wisdom of crowds”;
- the definition of a social infrastructure; and
- the kind of supports needed by youth to strengthen their work

For most of us, turning on a tap is an everyday occurrence, and we likely don’t think twice about it. For this session’s presenters, however, that simple act isn’t quite so simple.
Henry Lickers, Environmental Science Officer for the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne, is concerned about how dirty the water is – and what decades of industrial pollution in the St. Lawrence River have done to the health of both the Mohawk people and their economy. Veteran journalist Chris Wood wonders how much longer the tap will run at all, given that global warming is drying up lakes, aquifers and rivers all over the world, even as consumption rises. Both believe that poor “accounting” – the failure or unwillingness to accurately measure the environmental cost of progress – has allowed the problem to get this serious, and that action can and must be taken.
From local remediation to global conservation, each will share inspiring examples of workable solutions that can be implemented and individual choices that can be made, for the benefit of the natural world and future generations. At the end of the presentation, there will be a half hour for questions and answers.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Surveys of USW show our membership is just as concerned about the environment as most Canadians. We have been active in communities on environment issues since the 1950s. We have forged relationships to address pollution, toxic chemicals, and irresponsible employers.
The USW and Environmental Defence agree to create a strategic alliance to enable them to work together as advocates for working people and for the environment in key areas of global trade, the use of toxic substances in commercial activity, the creation of ‘green manufacturing’ jobs, and the development and implementation of strategies to address climate change and protect sustainable resources. Key areas: Address unregulated chemicals. Reform Toxic Chemical Policy Support municipal green manufacturing initiatives. Working collaboratively on climate change and green jobs. What is a strategic alliance? On the things we agree on, we plan to take specific actions working together to advance our common interests. On those issues that we differ, we recognize and respect our differences. Why join together? We did the math. Separate our support is weaker and we complement each others strengths.
Six Principles A cap on emissions should be imposed based on what science says is needed to protect our environment; The cap should cover as many emitting activities as possible, and close any loopholes; The system should promote the creation and retention of good green Canadian jobs; The system should reduce global emissions rather than shift carbon-emitting industries to countries with weaker standards; Canada has a unique responsibility to regulate pollution from the oil sands; and The program should direct cap and trade revenues and allowances domestically to public benefit. Revenues should also be directed internationally to help support clean economic development in emerging economies.
