3. INTRODUCTION
What is BRD?
1. A blu-ray disc is a optical storable device that stores
high-definition video
2. Blu-ray, also known as Blu-ray Disc (BD) is the name of
a next-generation optical disc format.
3. A blu-ray disc can store up to 50GB of data.
4. 1st Generation :
1. Compact Disc (CD):-- 650/700MB
2. It is with us for over 20 yrs.
3. Wavelength of laser which reads data: 780nm
4. Color of laser: Red
2nd Generation :
1. Digital versatile disc (DVD):-- 4.7GB
2. It offers high quality sound and video than CD.
3. Wavelength of laser which reads data: 650nm
4. Color of laser: Red
HISTORY
5. 3rd Generation:
1. Blu-ray disc (BD):-- 25/50 GB
2. Next generation optional disc format.
3. Developed by blu-ray association (which
includes Apple,Hitachi, HP, LG, Panasonic,
Pioneer)
4. Wavelength of laser that reads data: 405
HISTORY(CONT.)
6. The Technology of Blu-ray disc
So, in blu-ray disc:
1. Pit size-- 0.15 microns (more than twice as
2. small as the pits on DVD).
3. Track pitch– 0.32 microns
4. laser needed:-- blue-violet laser (450nm)
5. Data transfer rate: 36Mbps
8. Characteristics of Blu-ray disc
1. Single layer: 25 GB
Dual layer: 50 GB
2. Diameter: 120 mm
3. Thickness: 1.2 mm
4. Center hole diameter: 15 mm
5. Uses blue laser of wavelength 400 nm
10. Application
1. High definition television
recording
2. High definition
3. High definition camcorder
archiving
4. Mass data storage
11. Advantage & disadvantage
1. Large storage capacity.
2. Inclusion in gaming consoles.
3. Backward compatibility.
4. Edit or reorder programs
recorded on the disc .
5. Instantly skip to any spot on the
disc .
1. Very expansive technology.
2. High definition capacity is not
substantial amount.
3. Higher price for purchase
12. Both DVD and BD would most likely co-exist for
quiet some time until HDTVs become more
widespread.
Audio and video will reach higher qualities with
larger storage space
