Main area of activity
Creating an engaging way to bring young people into the City of York.
Target Audience
People in York between the ages of 16 and 24.
Rationale:
Throughout my first year of creative media, I worked on several posters and videos using both
Adobe Photoshop and Premiere Pro (occasionally Illustrator) which I also have installed at home.
Since I’ve used these programs for several years, I’m experienced in graphics design/video editing
and creating another project using those wouldn’t be beneficial for me. In order to improve my
skillset, I’ve decided to create a mobile app mockup design for my York visitor guide project using
Figma as it’s easy to learn, completely free to use and would be more engaging than a guidebook
or video.
Project Concept:
The concept of this project will be creating an appealing mobile app for young people living
in/visiting York to find suggestions of places to visit within the area. In order to do this, there will be
a short questionnaire at the start of the app before it generates a specific trail of York tailored to
the user’s preferences. However, since I’m not an experienced code writer and Figma isn’t
advanced enough to handle this, I’ll need to manually add several frames into different groups
which correspond to specific answers to create the illusion of an AI generating each individual
trails (not easy to explain, but it’ll work). The prototype will also provide hypothetical traffic updates,
available parking spaces, waiting/queue/popular times, a built-in ticket purchaser, and its own
optional radio station with songs I’ll choose myself.
To create a I’ll need to research pre-existing apps like the one I’m designing and use that
information to create my own.
How will the project be evaluated and reviewed:
To evaluate this project, I’ll need to review people’s feedback to see what they liked about the app
and what they didn’t like as well as reflecting on different methods I used to fix those issues. I’ll
also use my own thought and opinions to self-reflect on the finished products.
