REVERSE COAT Although the coat on the reverse side is usually not
required to have UV resistance, it must still be corrosion resistant and
highly adhesive. On a well cleaned and chemically pre-treated surface,
the primer and epoxy coats on the reverse side provide a coating that
fully meets these requirements.

PERFORMANCE
The time period before first maintenance is needed varies from 10 to 17
years, depending on the environment, profile, orientation and colour.
INFORMATION
Polyvinyl chloride based thermoplastic resin (PVC Plastisol) particularly
suitable for industrial applications. This coating is available in coil or cut-
length form supplied on hot-dipped galvanised substrate.
This products has good corrosion resistance and good handle-ability due
to the thickness of the coating. It has excellent formability characteristics
and is suited for Road Sign manufacture.
Standard colours are Road Traffic Grey and Black.
EMBOSSED PLASTISOL 200␮m
Recommended for aggressive atmospheres: urban sites, chemical
industry, coastal zones.

SIGN CONSTRUCTION
The adhererable sign face can be applied to either face of GRP Panels.
STIFFENING AND RIVETING
Support channels may be secured to the back of the panels by the
following methods:
• BOLLHOFF non-penetrating rivet system.
• Adhesives using 3M 4980 VHB Tape or 3M Scotchweld DP 460.
SUPPORT RAIL RECOMMENDATIONS
GRP Sheet has good tensile strength and impact resistance. The nature of
GRP is that it is more flexible than Aluminium. To obtain the best use and
service life it is recommended that the support rails, which provide
stiffening, are fixed in accordance with TABLE 1.

SUPPORT RAILS SHOULD BE FIXED A MINIMUM OF 30MM FROM THE RUNNING EDGE OF
THE SIGN. IF A SHEET JOINING SECTION IS TO BE FITTED BY MEANS OF RIVETING, THEN
THE RIVET SHOULD NOT BE WITHIN 15MM OF THE SHEET EDGE.
GRP Sheet is available in 3.2mm thickness. When fixing aluminium
support rails by means of a non-penetrating rivet system, a maximum rivet
spacing of 150mm should be adopted.
NOTE: GRP Sheet signs will flex more than Aluminium signs of the same
size until they are mounted on posts, hence it is advisable to store
completed signs flat or with support rails vertical to prevent possible
damage to the sign facings.
BOLLHOFF / HENROB RIVET RECOMMENDATIONS
Due to the different properties of the Aluminium alloy and GRP sign plate
used for signs, it is necessary to change rivets for each material thickness
as per TABLE 2 (see page 100).
• DO NOT rivet within 15mm from the edge of the GRP sign plate.
• Riveting pressure may need to be adjusted to suit the ductility of
the materials being riveted.
• Should not be necessary to change Upsetting Die or Nose Assembly.

to sign manufacture. BCP can be digitally or screen printed, have vinyl
lettering and sheet applied and can also be spray painted. Combined
with the pre-finished coloured polyester coating, it is truly a remarkable

With supply of our unitised sign systems or sign kits, we offer our sign
trade customers an off-site manufacturing service to allow them to
concentrate on the added value of sign design and installation.
Produced under quality controlled factory conditions, this robust
range of signs can be sourced incorporating an aluminium composite
sign tray, square or round posts with finials available in white and
grey from stock or mill finish for subsequent painting to customer
specification. With complementary accessories and simple assembly,
these low maintenance sign kits provide a complete solution which
should also help reduce delivery lead times to the end customer.

new AXYZ Router to complement our existing machines, this has

IDEAL FOR PRINT AND DISPLAY
Our wide range of free foamed PVC sheets, with smooth matt surface, are
particularly suited to print and display applications, accepting any form of
graphic overlay including screenprint, digital print direct and vinyl lamination.
Produced using chemical blowing agents to create a fine homogenous
cell structure, foamed PVC sheets are half the weight of solid PVC while
remaining flat and rigid, a key requirement for both processing and
application. Significant chemical resistance and compliant with all
international fire resistance standards, foamed PVC sheets can be used
safely in many demanding environments.
EXCEPTIONAL PRINT PERFORMANCE
For effective digital print output, subtractive colour mixing relies on
absorbing some wavelengths of light while reflecting others. For our large
format digital print customers, printing direct to substrate, our brighter
white foamed PVC sheet helps deliver a higher level of reflection from the
surface for printed colours that appear more vibrant with sharp, well
defined image definition.
APPLICATIONS
Readily fabricated and formed using conventional tools and equipment, our
foamed PVC sheets are suitable for a wide range of applications including
signage, hanging displays, framed panels, wall mounted, printed display
panels, point of purchase fixtures, wall cladding, partitions and suspended
ceilings.
Our foamed PVC sheets also make an ideal core material for structures in
the marine industry due to a combination of features including a high
insulation value, safe fire behaviour to the extent that the product is self-
extinguishing and other characteristics, including a high bending stiffness,
good strength to weight ratio and the ability to reduce noise, providing
an efficient acoustic barrier.

Celuka Sheet WHAT IS CELUKA?
Celuka is primarily a process and as with free foamed PVC, Celuka
produces a sheet that has been expanded with gas to create a cell
structure that helps to deliver a rigid, yet lightweight product.
In the Celuka process the sheet is cooled immediately upon exiting
the die which acts to suppress cell formation at the surface, creating
a hard, high quality finish, while allowing the hot melt to expand
inwards. The process is typically preferred for thicker sheets,
available from 10mm.
APPLICATIONS
An excellent replacement material for wood based products, Celuka
sheets have the same screw pull rating as pine yet will never be
troubled by rot, mould, swelling, chemical attack or insect infestation
and have extremely safe fire performance to BS476/7 Class 1.
Celuka sheets are suitable for use in many different applications, as
with free foamed PVC, including advertising, display structures,
cladding, lining and more.

BFP - Blackburns

WHAT IS BLACKBURNS FLUTED PANEL (BFP)?
BFP is the ideal printing medium. Its double-sided corona treatment allows
easy printing, even for digital printing. BFP is resistant to moisture, it is strong
and still very light. This makes BFP the perfect substrate for outside and inside
applications. The corona treatment also provides a better adhesion when
gluing the sheets to other materials, or when using adhesives.
BFP can be easily cut or die-cut into virtually any shape.
BFP is available in a variety of colours.
BFP is extruded from polypropylene copolymer, it is much more durable
than cardboard and is completely recyclable.

BFP - PRINTING
BFP sheets are preferably printed by means of screenprinting.
To assure a good adhesion of the inks, Corona treatment of the sheets is obliged.
For screenprinting it is recommended to use solvent-based or UV inks.
Water-based inks are giving poorer results.
ADVISED SCREENS
The finer the mesh of the screen, the finer the print. The rougher the screen,
the thicker the print layer will be.
Printing with solvent-based inks, screens with 120 lines/inch are recommended.
For thicker prints, rougher screens should be used.
Printing with UV-based inks, screens with 150-180 lines/inch are recommended.
If rougher screens are used with UV inks, the ink would not dry fast enough.
DRYING OF SOLVENT-BASED INKS
The drying of the ink can be realised in dry-racks in a drying oven (furnace).
The drying time and temperature is dependant on the sheet thickness, the
thickness of the printed layer and the type of drying oven. Proper tests prior
to production are recommended.
DRYING OF UV-BASED INKS
UV-based inks are dried by UV-radiation. The drying happens in a split second.
The speed of exposure to this UV-radiation source is dependant on the
intensity of the UV-radiation, thickness of the printed layer, colour of print, etc.
Whilst using solvent-based inks, it is advised to keep in mind that the ink can
dry after a while into the screen when not operating. Printing with UV-inks
doesn't have this risk, since inks are drying only under UV-radiation.
There are a lot of ink-suppliers who offer inks suitable for printing on
polypropylene sheets. The best ink will be different for every printer, so
proper testing is advised.

Cast Acrylic Sheet Cast acrylic sheet is available from stock in 3mm to 25mm thickness
and are also available to order in block, up to 50mm thick.
Produced by cell casting between glass plates, cast acrylic sheet
transmits 93% of visible light, offering a clarity that is superior to all
other thermoplastic sheet materials and glass with the advantage of
being half the weight with five times the impact strength. The perfect
material for designers looking to create a visual impact, cast acrylic
sheet can also have the edges polished to the same clarity as the
surface of the sheet.
The UV stability of cast acrylic means the material offers extreme
weather resistance in all environments and is offered with a 10 year
warranty assuring you of its long-term dependability and performance.
DIVERSE RANGE
Available in a green tint to provide the appearance of glass, a range of
neutral tints, primarily for glazing applications, black and a wide range
of transparent, translucent and opaque colours, all produced from pure
colour pigments, cast acrylic sheets can be colour-matched to a
sample, Pantone or RAL reference in order to meet specific customer
requirements or corporate identity.
Other surface and edge effects can also be supplied including edge-lit
lighting products for LED, fluorescent products in an exciting range of
colours and frost sheets.
CAST ACRYLIC OPALS FOR BACK-LIT LIGHTING EFFECTS
Our range of cast acrylic opals, available in all industry standard tints
and light transmissions are optimised for back-lit lighting applications
whilst also providing a clean, bright appearance during daylight hours
when the product is not illuminated.
APPLICATIONS
With a hard, high gloss surface and exceptional mechanical properties
combined with a wide range of colours and finishes, cast acrylic sheet
offers the user utility as well as decoration. Readily fabricated and
formed using conventional tools and equipment, cast acrylic sheets are
the ideal thermoplastic sheet material for signage and point of sale
amongst many other applications.

Polycarbonate
Sheet
Our flat polycarbonate sheets, available from stock in 2mm to 12mm
thicknesses are also available to order in 1mm and 15mm for specialist
requirements with the former in sheet or coil format.
Polycarbonate is the ideal safety glazing material where clarity,
impact resistance and fire performance are critical requirements.
EXCEPTIONAL PERFORMANCE
UV stable, polycarbonate sheet is manufactured with an integral,
co-extruded UV layer on both sides of the sheet so that it cannot be
installed in the wrong way. Delivering extreme weather resistance in
all environments, the sheet is offered with a 10 year warranty to
assure the user of its dependability and performance.
Able to absorb high levels of energy, with an impact resistance 200
times that of glass, at half the weight, polycarbonate sheet also
displays safe fire behaviour, making the product ideal for use both
indoors and out, including commercial buildings subject to more
demanding regulation or where there is a high risk of potential
damage.
APPLICATIONS
Readily fabricated and formed using conventional tools and
equipment, our polycarbonate sheets are also ideal for cold line
bending or thermoforming into complex shapes at deep draw
ratios.
Firmly established as a principal material for the built environment,
polycarbonate is suitable for a wide range of applications including
rooflights, recognised as being more efficient than windows for
getting natural daylight into a building, barrel vault roofing,
canopies and shelters, machine guards and signage using clear and
opal polycarbonate sheet for light box installations.
OTHER PRODUCTS
For applications exposed to airborne dust and dirt, our polycarbonate
is also available with a hard, abrasion resistant coating which further
increases the weatherability and chemical resistance of the sheet.

Mirror Sheet Blackburns mirror sheet is available in almost all product variants
including our thermoplastic range, Blackburns aluminium composite
(BCP), acrylic and polycarbonate as well as stainless steel and the Steel
Color®
range (see page 124). Please note BCP mirror sheet is only
available in silver and gold finishes suitable for interior applications.
The thermoplastic range is typically supplied as silver mirror in 3mm
thickness, with acrylic and polycarbonate products also available up
to 6mm thick, in gold and other colours as required.
With the advantage of being half the weight of plate glass mirror and
shatter resistant, thermoplastic mirror sheets offer all the benefits of
mirror without the potential risk of breakages.
Stainless steel mirror sheet is available in all grades and thicknesses
