COURSE CODE: POSC-31203
2. BIOSECURITY:
Biosecurity is defined, as the set of sanitary and preventive measures
that prevent and avoid the entry of infectious agents. It not only
prevent from disease but also prevent the spreading of disease.
IMPORTANCE:
Ever-rising disease trends and devastating disease outbreaks raised a
definite awareness about the concept of biosecurity and its
importance. Biosecurity refers to the designed measures and methods
to reduce the spread of pathogens between the farms. The stringent
biosecurity program ensures a disease free environment for better
productivity and profitability.
3. CHICKEN RENDERING PLANT:
• RENDERING:
Rendering is the process to convert dead chicken / chicken waste / feathers / tissues / market waste
in to valuable material like feather meal / chicken meal. Rendering is a process that converts waste
animal tissue value-added materials. Rendering can refer to any processing of animal products into
more useful materials, or more narrowly to the rendering of whole animal fatty tissue into purified
fats like tallow. Rendering can be carried out on an industrial, farm, or chicken processing plant.
• RENDERING PLANT PRODUCTS:
None of the poultry by-products are thrown away! However, before these by-products can be used
in other processes, they have to be treated first. Rendering plant turn these poulty by-products into
following high quality products:
• Meat and bone meal
• Whole meal
• Feather Meal
• Blood meal
• Fats/tallow/oil
4. BIOSECURITY SOP’S:
Following SOP’S should be followed at poultry rendering plant:
1.Controlled Access:
Restrict entry to authorized personnel, implement secure access points and monitor
visitor activities in the working area.
2.Personnel Hygiene:
Enforce strict hygiene practices, including hand washing and the use of appropriate
protective clothing, such as overalls and boots.
3.Quarantine Area:
Designate and maintain a quarantine area for incoming poultry by-products to assess
their health status before entering the production process.
4.Vehicle Disinfection:
Implement vehicle disinfectionprocedures at every points to prevent introduction of
contaminants from exernal sources.
5. CONTINUE...
5.Survillance Program:
Establish a regular survillance program for monitoring the health status of workers
working in the rendering plant.
6.Separated Processing Areas:
Physically seprate differsnt stages of processing to minimize the risk of cross-
contamination.
7.Equipment Cleaning:
Ensure thorough cleaning and disinfection of equipment between batches to prevent
the spread of pathogens.
8.Air Filtration:
Install effective air filtration systems to reduce the risk of air borne transmission of
contaminants.
6. CONTINUE....
9.Employee Training:
Regular train employees on biosecurity protocols, emphasizing the importance of
adherence to guidelines and reporting any irregularities.
10.Footbaths and Footmats:
Set up footbaths or footmats with disinfectants at key entry and exit points to minimize
the spread of contamination.
11.Waste Management:
Implement proper disposal methods for waste materials including feathers and other by-
products to avoid the spread of pathogens.
12.Rodent and Pest Control:
Develop and maintain a robust pest control program to prevent pests from entering the
premises and soreading disease.
7. CONTINUE:
13.Water Quality Management:
Ensure the quality of water used in the processing plant to prevent waterborne
contamination.
14.Record keeping:
Maintain detailed records of incoming materials, processing steps, and quality control
measures for traceability and analysis.
15.Emergency Response Plan:
Develop and regularly review an emergency response plan that includes procedure for
disease outbreaks,containment,and communication stratagies.
16.Regular Audits:
Conduct regular internal and external audits for the assurance of biosecurity and avoid
contamination.
8. CONTINUE...
17.Biosecurity Sinage:
Clearly display biosecurity sinage throughout the facility to remind personnel of the
importance of following protocols.
18.Monitoring and Testing:
Regularly monitor and test both incoming materials and final products for the presence
of pathogens.
19.Collaboration with Authorities:
Work closely with local veterinary authorities and rgulatory bodies to stay informed
about emerging diseases and comply with biosecurity regulations.
By systematically implementing these biosecurity measures,a poultry rendering plant can
minimize the risk of disease transmission, enhance the safety of rendered products, and
contribute to the overall health of the poultry industry.
