36. The way forward: Key highlights
India's biometric ID project is back on track.
The new Indian government has indicated strong support a project to require residents to
have biometric IDs in order to collect government benefits, setting a target of 1 billion
enrolments by 2015. (source: IDG-Computerworld Aust, September 11, 2014)
Biometric cards must for fishermen this season (source: Times of India, August 09, 2014)
Card transactions safety: PIN, biometrics are the way forward
Transactions authenticated by biometrics linked to the Aadhaar number would be a good
move in the long run. It's akin to fitting a car with both petrol and electric engines. The cost
will be high and there may not be too many transactions to process in the short run. Banks
are still in the process of considering it. This is something that needs to evolve, be tested and
then deployed fully. (source: Business line, December 13, 2013)
