1. At Chloe’s birthday garden party, her dad cooked beef burgers on their
barbeque for their guests. Everyone was hungry and so Chloe’s dad cooked
quickly. They were burnt on the outside and after a couple of mouthfuls
some guest complained that the burger’s where cold in the middle so
Chloe’s dad put them back on the barbeque to heat through. A few hours
later, some of the guests had bad stomach pains and some vomited. The
next day many guests were being sick and had diarrhoea.
The guests at Chloe’s party got food poisoning because the meat was raw in
the middle. The bacteria in the meat would not have been killed off, as it
usually is if the meat is cooked thoroughly. Bacterium is killed at high
temperatures, but in this case it wasn’t. Also Chloe’s dad could have
contaminated the meat by using the same utensils for cooked and raw
meat, the bacteria from raw meat was transferred via the tongs to the
cooked meat. Bacteria can enter the body through the mouth, with food
that is infected with it. Through cuts this is why we have scabs to seal the
wound and to stop bacteria getting in.
The body has antibodies that kill off bacteria. The white blood cells attack
cells unknown to them and kill the bacteria but this takes up to 3days to
happen.
Once the body has bacteria in its body the next time the white blood cells
recognise the bacteria and attack it straight away. This is why we usually
only have a disease like chicken pox once.
It takes a few hours for symptoms to occur because the food must be
digested. The bacterium reacts with chemicals in the gut this makes us sick.
The acid in the gut attacks the bacteria, this takes a while and the bacteria
cells multiply quickly so the body cannot kill off all the cells.
2. The body fights infection by reproducing lots of white blood cells to attack
the bacteria, this is our immune system. The body also tries to get as much
of the bacteria out of the stomach as quick as possible. We do this by being
sick and having diarrhoea.
Food poisoning can be prevented by thorough cooking all the food reaches
high temp. Washing hands and use different utensils for cooked and
uncooked meat, covering the food once cooked flies and insects carry
bacteria. Some bacteria even travel through the air.
