OBJECTIVES:
 relate species extinction to the failure of
populations of organisms to adapt to
abrupt changes in the environment
explain the importance of biological
diversity
distinguish environmental changes that
may result in the loss of the species
make a multimedia presentation that
promotes awareness on environmental
protection or preservation.
LET’S
RECALL
What is Biodiversity?
 It is a compound word
derived from
“biological diversity”.
 Bio =
 Diversity =
Variety
What is Biodiversity?
 The number and
variety of plants,
animals and other
organisms that exist
in an ecosystem
 It is a measure of the
variety of organisms
present in different
ecosystems
LET’S
CHECK
Can you consider this as a
Biodiversity?
Which ecosystem have high
biodiversity? Low biodiversity?
A B
Which ecosystem have high
biodiversity? Low biodiversity?
3 Levels of
Biodiversity
1. Species Biodiversity
 It describes the
variety in the number
and abundance of the
species within a
region.
 For example,
monkeys, dragonflies,
and meadow beauties
are all different
species.
2. Genetic Biodiversity
 The amount of
variation in genetic
material (DNA) within
a species or within a
population.
 Chihuahuas, beagles, and
Rottweilers are all the
same species —but
they're not the same
because there is variety
in their genes.
3. Ecosystem Biodiversity
 It describes the
assemblage and
Interaction of species
living together and
the physical
environment of a
given area.

Many human activities disturb the
balance in the ecosystem. All of these result
in ecological imbalance. Ecological
imbalance happens when there is a
disturbance which is either natural or man-
made disturbance that disrupts the balance
of an ecosystem.
 the addition of contaminants
or harmful substances into a
natural environment.These
contaminants are considered
pollutants and can damage
the quality of the air we
breathe and the water we
drink.
 2 major types- air pollution
- water pollution
1. POLLUTION
 Air pollution happens when solid, liquid, and
gas particles are dispersed into the air. Both
man-made and natural activities contribute to
air pollution.
• burning of fossil fuels
• exhaust from the vehicles and factories
• burning of plastics
• wildfires and volcanic ashes
1. POLLUTION
 respiratory
diseases
 acid rain
 global
warming
What are the effects of air pollution?
 Water pollution occurs when harmful
substances—often chemicals or
microorganisms—contaminate a stream, river,
lake, ocean, aquifer, or other body of water,
degrading water quality and rendering it toxic
to humans or the environment.
• improper waste disposal
• illegal fishing
1. POLLUTION
 fish kill
 water-borne
diseases
(amoebiasis)
 eutrophication
What are the effects of water pollution?
 happens
when forests
are cleared to
make the land
available for
other
purposes.
 Kaingin
system
2. DEFORESTATION
 drought
 floods/
landslides
 animal
extinction
 wildfire
What are the effects of deforestation?
 Overharvesting or
overfishing
 Dynamite fishing
 Cyanide fishing
 Muro-ami fishing
 Conversion of coastal
areas to resorts
3. DESTRUCTION OF COASTAL RESOURCES
 coral reef
destruction
 death of marine
animals
 scarcity of food
 water pollution
What are the effects of destruction the
coastal resources?
 Poaching is
the illegal
hunting,
capturing,
and often
killing of
wild animals.
4. ANIMAL POACHING
 animal
extinction
 spread of food-
borne illnesses
What are the effects of animal poaching?
 the overuse of
wild animal
and
plant species
by people.
 collection,
laboratory
work, and for
generating
money
5. EXPLOITATION OF SELECTED SPECIES

Project-based Learning:
“Change Starts With Me!”
 Create an advocacy material that
promotes awareness on
environmental protection or
preservation.
Tiktok
Objective:
 Promoting awareness on
environmental protection or
preservation
Theme:
 Badoc is a well-known town in Ilocos Norte for
its beauty and natural resources. The Shrine of
La Virgen Milagrosa, the Badoc Island, Juan
Luna Shrine, fine- sand beaches, Paruyan Falls,
hanging bridges and other natural ecosystem
were famous in the locality and in the province.
Over the years, the economic status of the town
continues to grow.
Situation:
 Because of the scenic view and instagramable
view that the town’s natural resources can
provide, lots of people from inside and outside
of Badoc continuously visited the town for
their relaxation and vacation purposes.
Situation:
To preserve the natural resources of Badoc,
you are assigned as tourism officers of the town.
To do this, you are given the following
tasks:
Situation:
1. Your group will create an advocacy material
that can be in the form video through TikTok.
The theme of your advocacy material should
focus on environmental protection or
preservation of the ecosystem in your town.
2. You may post, distribute, or show your
material to your barangay or school. You can
also upload your TikTok video on Facebook
and YouTube.
3. Observe health protocols in doing the PBL.
Tasks:
1. Documenters- take the photos and videos and
do a narrative documentation of the entire
process.
2. Presenters- package the entire report to be
presented in the Tiktok.
3. Choreographers – creates steps or
choreographies for Tiktok
4. Encoders/designers- make the designs of the
video on Tiktok.
Roles:
1. Narrative documentation
2. Photo documentation
3. Video documentation
4. Campaign material (media used)
5. Teamwork
