Verse 3. Jesus drove demon(s) out of demon(s)-possessed men/women, but how?
3-7. The 11th: Jesus healed a demon-possessed daughter of a gentile by
telemedicine
In <Matthew 15:21-28> and <Mark 7:24-30>, Jesus healed a demon-
possessed daughter of a gentile with her mother's faith and the word of
Jesus as the energy and the wave. Her mother was a Canaan(kéinən) or a
Phoenician1) or a Greek as a pagan or a gentile.

In addition to healing demon-possessed Jews, Jesus might have remotely
diagnosed a Gentile’s demon-possessed daughter and driven out the demon
with the remote ‘word’. Today's medical technology must be telemedicine. Now
the gospel of Jesus opens to the Gentiles. But here is the way of Jesus' love and
art. It was based on mother’s strong faith through Jesus’ high-level questions
and on Jesus’ highly advanced diagnosis of a demon-possessed daughter.
The 11th - Jesus healed a demon-
possessed daughter by telemedicine

Jesus initially rejected the woman's asking for help, like saying, "I was not sent
away except by the lost sheep of Israel." It was because this woman was from
the Gentiles. Also, if the man(father) would come and ask Jesus, Jesus could
listen or not, but this time the woman(mother) came and knelt before Jesus
and asked, that’s why Jesus first rejected.
Therefore, Jesus asked higher-level questions as “First let the children eat all
they want, for it is not right to take the children's bread and toss it to
their dogs.“ The Syrian Greeks were highly educated and knowledgeable,
because they were under the influence of Hellenism2). The woman answered,
“Yes, Lord, but even the dogs under the table eat the children's
crumbs.“ What does it mean? We need to know the historical background to
understand this verse.

(Please read the historical background of
Phoenicia as follows). Phoenicia was the
northern part of Galilee, inhabited by the
Canaanites, the son of Ham, and today is the
Syria and the Lebanon(lébənən). The Greek name
for Canaan(kéinən) was Phoenicia, which meant
the color of purple. The Greeks called the
Phoenicians as the phoinikes, or people of
purple, because they had the technology to
make the phoinix, an expensive violet dye. It is
presumed to have been named by Ancient
Greece(c.BC 1100-BC 146) at the time when
Phoenician was in its heyday of maritime trade
around BC 1,000.
The range of Canaan varied from generation to
generation, but from the top of the map was a
port city such as Beritos(Beirut), Byblos=Gebal,
Sidon, Tire(Tyre), and it took the form of the
city federation centered on port cities. And
residents mainly engaged in maritime trade.

Therefore, the Phoenicians enjoyed a rich life. The wealthy tend to ignore
Heavenly God the Father and Jesus. Thus, from ancient times the Jews called
the Gentiles into dogs.
Through the background mentioned in <Matthew 15:21-28> and <Mark
7:24-30>, we can see that the background of the event was a filthy or
unsanitary gentile area, and the things depicted in the event were Tire, Sidon,
Greek, a Phoenician woman, dogs, and so on, thus it emphasized the
appearance of the gentile area.
According to <Mark>, this woman who came to Jesus was described as a
Greek in Syrian Phoenicia as a gentile who had a young daughter with an
evil spirit. Here, ‘a Greek' refers to not only Gentiles, but also women who
were highly educated citizens of Greece. So, Jesus' first answer to a woman
who fell down under Jesus’s feet and who humbly asked for her daughter’s
healing was close to an insulting rejection.

The second asking of Jesus was given in parables. At the time of Jesus, Tire
area on the beach was a wealthy city that stocked and used the crops of
Jewish farmers in the northern mountains of Galilee. Thus, especially when the
crops were lacked in winter time, relatively poor Jewish farmers had difficulty in
taking food because of no stockpiled grain. Therefore, Jesus compared “the
bread of children" to “the crops of Israel“, ”dogs" to “Phoenicians”, and asked
“Is it right to take the children’s bread and toss it to their dogs?“ In other
words, “children” refer to “Jews” and “dogs” refer to “Gentiles”.
We have a question, why did merciful Jesus here react to this woman with the
faith? If so, what would be the meaning and intention of Jesus' actions?
Considering the circumstances and the context at that time, we can see that
Jesus' response to this parable would be very intentional. As I already
mentioned, this parable was a complaint by Jewish farmers when crops were
lacked in winter time, and Jesus not only tested her belief by using this parable,
but also Jesus might try to declare or announce the start of his ministry to
Gentiles more paradoxically.

Even though this woman was a gentile, she understood the meaning of Jesus’
parable and replied, “Yes, Lord, but even the dogs under the table eat the
children's crumbs”. The woman's answer shows that she acknowledged Israel's
privilege and choice of God's love and care. Nevertheless, appealing to Jesus'
unconditional mercy and astonishing abilities, she hoped to obtain even the
crumbs, even if she was a dog.
In fact, considering her high education or the conflict between the Jews and
the Tire, the reaction of the woman was very unusual. Despite the
contemptuous-figurative Jesus’ answer, she not only accepted humbly enough
to take herself as a dog for her daughter's healing(eating crumbs), but also
responded persistently without disappointment. For her daughter's healing, she
had to go beyond this wall of contempt and rejection. As a result, the woman
who had a persistent petition with great faith received a response from Jesus,
“Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted“, and her daughter
was healed from that very hour, and which resulted in her faith, more and
more great faith. The result of the woman's faith was not the abundance of
simple crumbs, but the abundant grace of God the Father(care and healing)
and Jesus.

<Matthew 15:21> - 예수께서 거기서 나가사 두로와 시돈 지방으로 들어가시니(Leaving that
place, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon.)(NIV)
15:22 - 가나안 여자 하나가 그 지경에서 나와서 소리질러 가로되 주 다윗의 자손이여 나를 불쌍
히 여기소서 내 딸이 흉악히 귀신들렸나이다 하되(A Canaanite woman from that vicinity came
to him, crying out, "Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me! My daughter is suffering terribly
from demon-possession.")
15:23 - 예수는 한 말씀도 대답지 아니하시니 제자들이 와서 청하여 말하되 그 여자가 우리 뒤에
서 소리를 지르오니 보내소서(Jesus did not answer a word. So his disciples came to him and
urged him, "Send her away, for she keeps crying out after us.")
15:24 - 예수께서 대답하여 가라사대 나는 이스라엘 집의 잃어버린 양 외에는 다른 데로 보내심
을 받지 아니하였노라 하신대(He answered, "I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel.")
15:25 - 여자가 와서 예수께 절하며 가로되 주여 저를 도우소서(The woman came and knelt
before him. "Lord, help me!" she said.)
15:26 - 대답하여 가라사대 자녀의 떡을 취하여 개들에게 던짐이 마땅치 아니하니라(He replied,
"It is not right to take the children's bread and toss it to their dogs.")
15:27 - 여자가 가로되 주여 옳소이다마는 개들도 제 주인의 상에서 떨어지는 부스러기를 먹나
이다 하니("Yes, Lord," she said, "but even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their
masters' table.")
15:28 - 이에 예수께서 대답하여 가라사대 여자야 네 믿음이 크도다 네 소원대로 되리라 하시니
그 시로부터 그의 딸이 나으니라(Then Jesus answered, "Woman, you have great faith! Your
request is granted." And her daughter was healed from that very hour.)

<Mark 7:24> - 예수께서 일어나사 거기를 떠나 두로 지경으로 가서 한 집에 들어가 아무
도 모르게 하시려 하나 숨길 수 없더라(Jesus left that place and went to the vicinity of
Tyre. He entered a house and did not want anyone to know it; yet he could not keep
his presence secret.)(NIV)
7:26 - 그 여자는 헬라인이요 수로보니게 족속이라 자기 딸에게서 귀신 쫓아 주시기를 간
구하거늘(The woman was a Greek, born in Syrian Phoenicia. She begged Jesus to drive
the demon out of her daughter.)
7:27 - 예수께서 이르시되 자녀로 먼저 배불리 먹게 할찌니 자녀의 떡을 취하여 개들에게
던짐이 마땅치 아니하니라("First let the children eat all they want," he told her, "for it is
not right to take the children's bread and toss it to their dogs.")
7:28 - 여자가 대답하여 가로되 주여 옳소이다마는 상 아래 개들도 아이들의 먹던 부스러
기를 먹나이다("Yes, Lord," she replied, "but even the dogs under the table eat the
children's crumbs.")
7:29 - 예수께서 가라사대 이 말을 하였으니 돌아가라 귀신이 네 딸에게서 나갔느니라 하
시매(Then he told her, “For such a reply, you may go; the demon has left your
daughter.”)
7:30 - 여자가 집에 돌아가 본즉 아이가 침상에 누웠고 귀신이 나갔더라(She went home
and found her child lying on the bed, and the demon gone.)
