Activity Three: The Early Ministry of John the Baptist and Jesus’
Baptism and Temptation
The Ministry of John the Baptist (Matthew 3:1-12; Mark 1:1-8; Luke 3:1-20)
1. Briefly describe John the Baptist as to his dress, diet, and lifestyle.
Answer: Meat was locusts and wild honey. The World English Bible translates
the passage as: Now John himself wore clothing. ... His food was locusts and
wild honey.
2. What was the basic message of John’s preaching?
Answer: His message was that God's judgment on the world was imminent and
that, to prepare for this judgment, the people should repent their sins, be
baptized, and produce appropriate fruits of repentance.
3. What baptism did John preach? In what region of Palestine was
hebaptizing?
Answer: : John the Baptist emerged as a prophet in the region of the
lower Jordan River valley. He had a circle of disciples, and Jesus was
among the recipients of his rite of baptism.
4. How did the Jews react to John’s preaching and baptizing? Give
evidenceto support your answer.
Answer: John resisted because he felt unqualified, unworthy to do what
Jesus had asked. Do you feel inadequate to fulfill your mission from God?
John felt unworthy even to unfasten the shoes of Jesus, yet Jesus said John
was the greatest of all prophets.
5. What did John say to the Scribes and Pharisees who came to be
baptizedby him? Why?
Answer: John's theme of life- eternal life, comes up again and again. One
could argue this is his main purpose: to demonstrate Jesus as the source of
eternal life. We've been throwing around the term “gospel” a lot.
6. What was John referring to when he said, “And even now the ax is laid to
theroot of the trees?”
Answer: Even now the ax of God’s judgment is poised, ready to sever the
roots of the trees. Yes, every tree that does not produce good fruit will be
chopped down and thrown into the fire.

Answer: John confirms that he is not the Christ nor Elijah nor 'the prophet' when
asked by Jewish priests and Pharisees; instead, he described himself as the
"voice of one crying in the wilderness".
8. What did John say the Christ would do when He came? How and
whenwould that be done?
Answer: Jesus said that John the Baptist was the greatest Prophet. He said
that John's mission had been prophesied in the scriptures. That John was a
messenger/His forerunner. John lived in the wilderness.
The Baptism of Jesus by John (Matthew 3:13-17; Mark 1:9-11;
Luke 3:21-22)
9. What did John the Baptist say to Jesus when he saw Him coming to
bebaptized of him? What was Jesus’ answer to him?
Answer: Summary. Jesus came to John the Baptist while he was
baptising people in the River Jordan. John tried to make him change his
mind, but Jesus answered, “In this way we will do all that God
requires.” So John agreed.
10. Briefly describe the events surrounding the baptism of Jesus.
Answer: The Bible says that when we are baptized, we are all brothers and
sisters in Christ regardless of our tribes, gender or professions, Galatians 3:26-29
explains, “So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith, for all of
you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.

Jesus’ Temptation in the Wilderness (Matthew 4:1-11; Mark 1:12,13; Luke 4:1-13)
11. By whom and for what purpose was Jesus led into the wilderness?
Answer: At that time Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil. He
fasted for forty days and forty nights and afterwards was hungry. The tempter approached and said
to him, “If you are the Son of God, command that these stones become loaves of bread.
12. How long did Jesus fast? Briefly state what you believe His physical, mental, and
emotionalconditions might have been.
Answer: At that time Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the

13. What did Satan say to Jesus in an effort to get Him to turn stones into bread? How
did Jesusanswer this temptation?
Answer: The Devil tempted Jesus to turn stones into bread, to which he replied “Human
beings cannot live on bread alone, but need every word God speaks.” The second
temptation was for Jesus to throw himself from the highest point of the temple and order
angels to catch him.
14. What was Satan’s second appeal to Jesus? How did Jesus answer it?
Answer: Satan says, "All these things I will give you if you fall down and do an act of worship to
me." Jesus replies "Get away, Satan! It is written: 'You shall worship the Lord your God and only
Him shall you serve.
15. What was Satan’s third appeal to Jesus? How did Jesus answer it?
Answer: In answering the first two temptations, Jesus had already resisted the first three aspects of
the devil’s third temptation. He would not turn stones into bread to stop His suffering from hunger.
He would not jump off the highest point of the temple to get instant notoriety. In neither temptation
would He succumb to the lure of a shortcut to get instant results. The devil then added another
element to make up a new and enticing package:

16. What was John’s initial reply to the priests and Levites who asked him who he was? When
pressedfor a more definite answer, what did he say?
Answer: A priest is a special man chosen among all the Levites to perform temple-related
preaching and duties. Levite is a tribe of the community of men who are educated and devotees
of God. Levite is usually a man according to the ancient Israel culture. They perform different
duties in the service of God.

17. When asked why he baptized, since he was not the Christ, Elijah, or one of the prophets,
what wasJohn’s answer?
Answer: Jesus was God's son, so he was sinless and there was no need for him to receive
forgiveness. Jesus' baptism was also an opportunity to show his authority as God confirmed he
was his Son. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the
Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have
commanded you.
18. When John saw Jesus approaching, what did he say to the multitudes who were listening to
him?
Answer: When he turned around, he saw this Son of Man figure. In Revelation 1:18, the figure
whom John sees identifies himself as "the First and the Last," who "was dead, and behold I am alive
for ever and ever", a reference to the resurrection of Jesus.
19. How did John know Jesus was/is the Son of God?
Answer: Jesus is called "son of God," while followers of Jesus are called, "sons of God". As applied to
Jesus, the term is a reference to his role as the Messiah, or Christ, the King chosen by God

Activity Four: The Beginning of Christ’s Ministry
Jesus’ First Disciples (John 1:35-51)
1. What name did Jesus give to Simon the son of Jonah? What does this
namemean? Why do you think Jesus gave it to him?
Answer: He was later given by Jesus the name Cephas, from Aramaic ‫ֵּכ‬‫י‬‫ָפ‬‫א‬
(Kepha), literally meaning "rock" or "stone". Christ's given name,
commonly Romanized as Yeshua, was quite common in first-century
Galilee. (Jesus comes from the transliteration of Yeshua into Greek and
then English.) .Because the New Testament was originally written in
Greek, not Hebrew or Aramaic.
2. Who did Philip tell Nathanael they had found? What
question didNathanael then ask? What reply did he receive?
Answer: The first disciples called by Jesus are all portrayed as
reaching out immediately to family or friends: thus, Philip found
Nathanael and said to him, “We have found Him of
whom Moses in the law, and also the prophets, wrote — Jesus of
Nazareth, the son of Joseph”. It would make more sense to us if
Jesus had said, “Hey Nathanael, ask this one question of their
Bible reading: “What difference does it . He came to encourage

3. What did Jesus say in reference to Nathanael? What does that mean?
Answer: Jesus affirmed that Nathanael was a man of integrity and openness
to the work of God. Calling him a "true Israelite," Jesus identified Nathanael
with Jacob, the father of the Israelite nation. Also, the Lord's reference to
"angels ascending and descending" (John 1:51), strengthened the association
with Jacob.
4. Who did Nathanael say Jesus was?
Answer: Nathanael recognizes Jesus as "the Son of God" and "the King of
Israel". He reappears (as "Nathanael of Cana") at the end of John's Gospel, as
one of the disciples to whom Jesus appeared at the Sea of Galilee after the
Resurrection.

Jesus’ First Miracle (John 2:1-11)
6. Where was Jesus when He performed His first miracle? What
occasionbrought Him there?
Answer: The transformation of water into wine at the Marriage at
Cana or Wedding at Cana is the first miracle attributed to Jesus in
the Gospel of John. In the Gospel account, Jesus Christ, his mother
and his disciples are invited to a wedding.
7. What was the miracle? Who encouraged Him to do it? Why?
What doesthat say about the faith that person had in Jesus?
Answer: First, Jesus performed miracles to show compassion and
meet human need. For example, in Mark 1, Jesus encounters a man
with leprosy. It is because the Bible teaches that Jesus is God in the
flesh. Jesus provides us with a portrait of God.
8. What does this miracle demonstrate about Jesus?
Answer: Miracles showed the compassion Jesus had for people. ... This can
be seen when Jesus healed the paralyzed man because of the faith of his
friends. This teaches us to have faith. Miracles demonstrated the close
relationship Jesus had with God, his Father.
Jesus Cleanses the Temple (John 2:13-25)
9. When Jesus went to Jerusalem for the Passover, what did He find in
thetemple?
Answer: In the temple He found those who were selling oxen and
sheep and pigeons, and the money-changers sitting there. And
making a whip of cords, He drove them all out of the temple, with the
sheep and oxen.
10. What did Jesus do when He found the above conditions at the
temple?What did He say?
Answer: Jesus cleansed the Temple twice. ... And He poured out the
coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables. And He
told those who sold the pigeons, “Take these things away; do not
make My Father's house a house of trade.” His disciples remembered
that it was written, “Zeal for your house will consume Me.”

12. Who was Nicodemus? Why did he come to Jesus? What had caused him to come to

Answer: Nicodemus was a Pharisee and a member of the Sanhedrin mentioned in three
places in the Gospel of John: He first visits Jesus one night to discuss Jesus' teachings. He
came to Jesus at night, sneaking off to see the man behind the miracles. He was a powerful
Pharisee, a member of the Sanhedrin, the Jewish ruling council. He wasn't supposed to mix
with the motley lot that followed Jesus.
13. What did Jesus, at first, say to Nicodemus? How did Nicodemus respond? What did Jesus then tell
him?
Answer: How can a man be born when he is old?" Nicodemus asked. "Surely he cannot enter a
second time into his mother's womb to be born!" Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth, no one can enter
the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit
gives birth to spirit.
14. How is one “born of water and the Spirit?” Why is it essential to be born in such a manner?
Answer: Jesus means by Water and the Spirit. Easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than a
rich man enter God's. A person who is “to the manner born” is one who has acquired genteel tastes and
habits by virtue of having been born into a privileged class: “Rachel is charming at dinner parties — as if
she were to the manner born.” This expression is sometimes mistakenly rendered as “to the manor
born.”
15. What did Jesus mean when He said that He had to be lifted up as Moses lifted up the serpent
inthe wilderness?
Answer: As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so also Jesus, Son of God and Son of
man, was lifted up when He was crucified and condemned upon the cross for the sins of the whole
world. ... Jesus, when He was lifted up upon the cross, paid in full the just penalty for the sins of all
people. His resurrection is proof.
16. Does John 3:16 teach salvation by faith only? Explain.
Answer: Faithfulness is better than knowledge in measuring spiritual maturity of disciples. There is a
shocking priority Jesus held and our churches often miss.
17. How was Jesus the “light” who came into the world? Why is this such a fitting description of
Him? Why did some reject that light? What are the consequences of rejecting it? What happens

Answer: Whoever walks in the dark does not know where they are going. John 17:3 Now this is
eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ. Social rejection increases anger,
anxiety, depression, jealousy and sadness. It reduces performance on difficult intellectual tasks, and
can also contribute to aggression and poor impulse control, as DeWall explains in a recent review

Answer: John the Baptizer, the forerunner of Jesus, preached a message of repentance, and baptized those who
were receptive. John 3:23 records, “John also was baptizing in Aenon near Salim, because there was much
water there; and people were coming and were being baptized”
19. What testimony did John give about Jesus on this occasion?
Answer: A man named John was sent from God. He came for testimony, to testify to the light, so that all
might believe through him. He was not the light, but came to testify to the light. And this is the testimony
of John.
20. What awaits those who “believe in the Son?” What does it mean to believe on Jesus?
Answer: And anyone who believes in God's Son has eternal life. ... but whoever refuses to believe in the
Son won't see life, but the wrath of God remains on him." Jesus is the Saviour therefore, undoubtedly,
belief in Jesus is fundamental to salvation. ... He simply told him to believe in him: “For God so loved the
world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal
life.”
