Questions 16-25
Read the following review and complete the graphic organiser given.
Vitamin A
Vitamin A is fat-soluble. It can be found in oranges, ripe yellow fruits, leafy vegetables, carrots,
pumpkins, spinach and liver. A person suffers from night-blindness if there is a lack of this vitamin.
On the other hand, an overdose of this vitamin can lead to hypervitaminosis A.
Vitamin B
There are a few types of Vitamin B, all of which are water-soluble. Vitamin Bl(Thiamine) is found
in oatmeal, brown rice, vegetables, potatoes, liver and eggs. Lack of this vitamin causes beriberi
but with large doses of it, a person can suffer from drowsiness or muscle relaxation. Vitamin 82
(Riboflavin) is present in dairy products, bananas, popcorns, green beans and asparagus. Vitamin
83 (Niacin) is found in meat, fish, eggs and mushrooms. Too much of this vitamin damages the
liver. Deficiency of this vitamin causes pellagra.
Vitamin C
Vitamin C, known as ascorbic acid by its chemical name, is present in many fruits, especially
ciffus fruits, vegetables and liver as well. Vitamin C is water-soluble. A person suffers from scurvy
or bleeding gums if there is deficiency of this vitamin in the body. On the other hand, an overdose
of it can cause Vitamin C megadosage.
Vitamin D
Vitamin D is fat-soluble. Vitamin D can be found in fish, egBS, liver and mushrooms. Lack
of it causes rickets.
Vitamin E
Vitamin E is present in many fruits and vegetables as well. Deficiency of this disease is very rare
except for a mild form of anemia in newborn infants. Vitamin E is fat-soluble.
Vitamin K
Food sources of Vitamin K are leafy green vegetables such as spinach, egg yolks and liver. Vitamin
K is fat-soluble. Lack of this vitamin causes diathesis.

Questions 26-31
Read the passage below and answer the questions that follow.
The whispers and giggles woke me up early in the morning. Across
the room, curious children peeked over the open window's edge. Feeling
a liule embarrassed to be caught sleeping on the table, I waved them off
and got myself together. Refugee camp or not, I still needed the first few
minutes of the day to myself.
Half an hour later I presented myself to the Red Crescent office. I
was ready to begin work as the Social Care Coordinator at the Pulau
Bidong Vietnamese Boat People (VBP) Carnp off the coast of Terengganu,
Malaysia. It was June 1979. As a fresh sociology grad, I was bent on
changing the world, or at least the world of the 46,000 refugees crowded
onto 100 hectares of land.
The Red Crescent Office and store was one of the few real buildings
in the camp. The others were a camp hospital, the offices for the third
country delegations, and the Joint Malaysian Army & Navy Base Head
quarters. There was also a church, which the refugees had built with the
wood found on the island.
I was brought to see the chairman of the VBP Carnp Committee.
He was delighted. "Finally! Something more than the basic necessities was
in sight," he said. He wanted activities for the women and children to be
organized. Supplies and clothing to enable the running of English classes.
Work groups and other sessions that would help to sustain life in the camp
and prepare the refugees for their new lives in countries such as the United
States, Australia and Germany. I was expected to help coordinate the move-
ment of these supplies and work with the camp Committee to ensure they
were used appropriately.
I learnt all this over breakfast with the committee. Our meal caught
me by surprise-delicious freshly baked French loaves with butter and hot
tea. They told me if I stayed at the camp long enough, I would come to
know the places where I could eat delicious Vietnamese food, courtesy of
camp residents who could cook.
Then I met the delegates from different countries, the people who
decided who would be accepted to which countries. Finally I was assigned
a translator. His name was Lam Van Dai. We toured the rest of the camp
and I saw that most of the refugees Iived in tents or shacks built with scrap
wood, tarpaulin bags and anything else that was available. Long houses
were being built to provide better accommodation, but until they were
ready, it was up to each family's ingenuity to find the best accommodation
they could.
Indeed, the island's natural vegetation had long been stripped to
make temporary housing. Water sources were no longer potable. Daily
ferries brought in water, two buckets per household. People waited patiently
in queues that snaked up and down the shoreline near the makeshift jetty
to collect it.

supported by sticks. Over the course of the evening, they not only shared
their ration of instant noodles and sardines with me, but also their hopes
and dreams. He was among the lucky ones on the camps because he
had worked for the Americans and he could speak English. Mostly he spoke
of the terrible journey across the South China Sea, the fear of being killed
by the pirates and the long days in the sea without water, and how they
had to hold on to the hope that they would reach safety.
9 That night, I took a few minutes to look back over my day as I
stared at the zinc walls. There was so much to do. I really did not know
how I was going to do it.

Nature
We have neither Summer nor Winter
Neither Autumn nor Spring.
We have instead the days
When the gold sun shines on the lush green canefields -
Magnificently.
The days when the rain beats like bullets on the roofs
And there is no sound but the swish of water in the
gullies
And trees struggling in the high Jamaica winds.
Also there are the days when the leaves fade from off
guango trees
And the reaped canefields lie bare and fallow to the sun.
But best of all there are the days when the mango and
the logwood blossom
When the bushes are full of the sound of bees and the
scent of honey,
When the tall grass sways and shivers to the slightest
breath of air,
When the buttercups have paved the earth with yellow
stars
And beauty comes suddenly and the rains have gone.
