• Chapter 3: Karma Yoga (The yoga of action) - 43 verses. Confused by listening to Krishna's exaltation of samkhya (jnana) yoga (The yoga of knowledge), Arjuna questions why he should engage in fighting if knowledge is more important than action (3:1-2). Krishna then explains nishkama karma (performing one's duties without desiring its fruits - detached activity) as the appropriate course of action (3:3-8). He explains that both improper action and neglect of duty are impelled by desire and lack of knowledge. Krishna counsels Arjuna to act with knowledge and detachment without falling victim to his own attractions and aversions (3:29-30).
In this Chapter Lord Krishna talks about renunciation of Karma & Sannyasa for one's spiritual development. After describing Karma-Yoga in the previous chapters, Sri Krishna describes here how one should intelligently renounce Karma & enter the nobler spiritual technique of meditation. This chapter is a bridge between Karma-Yoga & Pure Meditation. It describes: what is the spirit of renunciation & how the "Yoga-of-renunciation-of action" can be practiced.

What is YogaYoga is an ancient art of spiritual and physical .docxalanfhall8953
What is Yoga?
Yoga is an ancient art of spiritual and physical development that originated in India over 4,000 years ago (around the same time as the formation of Hinduism).
Yoga literally translates as Unionor To Yoke. In Hindu philosophy, yoga unites the Atman (individual soul) with Brahman (the divine). On a basic level, the goal of yoga is to yoke the mind, body, and spirit together in union to attain a state of peacefulness and well-being. Or in other words, Yoga is a reconnection with the sacred.
In the past few decades, the media has portrayed yoga as a trendy fitness regime, one that celebrities promote as bringing clarity and inner awareness as well as a fit and red carpet ready body. This yoga boom has created an increase in yoga classes and centers.
However, many traditional yoga practitioners feel this interest in yoga is focusing too narrowly on the physical aspects, or the asana(posture) practice, when yoga is actually a complex, multi-layered system that addresses every level of being, including one's emotional and mental state as well as our spiritual well-being. As you'll see, the postures are actually only one of the limbs ofPatanjali's 8-limb system of yoga.
History of Yoga
Remember when you learned about the Indus Valley and the Stone Seals that were discovered there? Well, some of those seals had images of yogis doing various postures and meditations. Archeologists speculate that these yogis were held in high regard because of their prominence on the seals.
The forest yogis, known as rishis, taught through oral tradition. They dedicated their lives to practicing and teaching postures, meditations, reciting spiritual poetry, reading the scriptures, and living a life of austerity. Some even say they had magical powers and could levitate.
Whatever the case, there is good reason to believe these rishis were held in very high respect!
The Yoga Sutras
Though yoga had been around for a long time already, it wasn't until Patanjali (considered to be a rishi himself) compiled all these teachings together around 200 BCE that Yoga really became solidified as a philosophical tradition. Patanjali was an expert in Ayruveda and Sanskrit and is considered by some Hindus to be an incarnation of Vishnu's vehicle (the cobra).
Considered the "Father of Yoga," Patanjali's compilation on Yogic philosophy and poetic instructions on how to attain samadhi (enlightenment) become known as the Yoga Sutras, literally, the "Threads of Yoga." In this book, Patanjali defines yoga as "Yoga Chitta Vritti Nirodahah" which means "Yoga is the stopping of the turnings of the mind."
Called the "Heart of Yoga", the Yoga Sutras are meant to be memorized and recited. As compact wisdom packages, they are to be repeatedly studied throughout one's life. Some may call them vague, but others say there is a lot of room (purposely) for interpretation and reflection. It is through these sutras that Yoga becomes known as a practical mysticism. The Yoga Sutras are consider.

In Jude 17-23 Jude shifts from piling up examples of false teachers from the Old Testament to a series of practical exhortations that flow from apostolic instruction. He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. Homily: The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity Sunday 2024.docxJames Knipper
Countless volumes have been written trying to explain the mystery of three persons in one true God, leaving us to resort to metaphors such as the three-leaf clover to try to comprehend the Divinity. Many of us grew up with the quintessential pyramidal Trinity structure of God at the top and Son and Spirit in opposite corners. But what if we looked at this ‘mystery’ from a different perspective? What if we shifted our language of God as a being towards the concept of God as love? What if we focused more on the relationship within the Trinity versus the persons of the Trinity? What if stopped looking at God as a noun…and instead considered God as a verb? Check it out…
3. Gita -
There is an increase of knowledge.
with knowledge of the soul as distinct from matter,.
Fifth chapter how it should increase up to the level of the Supersoul,
as the person advances in
working in the detached spirit, for liberation,
with good association.
Selfish karma
When one performs
nishkäma karma
yoga on the level of
knowledge of the
soul only, then he
tends to remain
impersonal,
In the sixth chapter the idea that the Supersoul is an expansion of
Krishna will be introduced, and then finally that one should relate
with Krishna through bhakti.

he understands how the material world is running,
and that there is a higher controller,as seen in the fifth chapter,
then he develops a consciousness of the Supersoul

7. So virāga or vairāgya is being “apart from emotional coloration.” It is seeing
the world as it is, not as our emotions make it appear to us. We are back to
good old tattvatah, the way things really are. If we make a continued
effort to see things as they are, not as our emotions color them, we
can learn to control our mind. That is what Krishna tells Arjuna.
http://www.theosophical.org/files/resources/selfstudy/Gita.pdf
““ VAIRAGYAVAIRAGYA""
" VI “
is “apart from.”
" RAGA "
“COLOR,”
+
"SAM “
comes from a root
meaning
“join together.”
And colors are always associated with emotions.
We are in the pink when we are happy and
see red when angry.
We are in a blue mood when sad, or
a black mood when despairing, or
a gray mood when depressed.
We are in a brown study when distracted.
We are green with envy or yellow when cowardly,
or purple with rage.
Clairvoyants tell us that when we are overpowered by an emotion, our auras are
flushed with a color corresponding to that emotion.
So then we perceive and respond to the world through that emotional coloration.
Then we are not seeing the world as it is, but as we have colored it with our
emotion.

13. 5.15.1. Arjuna repeats the same question of the beginning of chapter 3.
He wants to know which of the two processes is more beneficial, not better.
5.25.2. Lord Krishna answers by saying that karma yoga (which Prabhupada then
translates as devotional service) is better.
5.35.3. This explains how beneficial karma yoga is.
5.45.4. Krishna now says that there is no real difference between them.
But of course the question is which is easier.
5.55.5. A further clatification of vs 5.4.
Through each one can achieve the same goal.
5.65.6. Here Lord Krishna is clearly recommending the process of karma yoga or
devotional service.
It is so much easier for a person who is entangled (Rajasic & Tamasic),
because they need to engage their bodies and minds.

15. LIFESTYLE
When Self-knowledge is gained, one discovers that he is akartā, abhoktā and hence asaṃsārī.
Thus, the renunciation of body-identification is true sannyāsa which
is called jñānakarma-sannyāsa. This sannyāsa can coexist with active
life because it is mental renunciation.
secluded life
āśrama-sannyāsa
[sānkhya, in this chapter]
But āśrama-sannyāsa cannot co-
exist with active life because it is
physical renunciation.
active life
karma-yoga
[yoga, in this chapter]
In both the lifestyles, one is identified with the equipments.
He is a kartHe is a kartāā, and hence a sa, and hence a saṃṃssāārrīī..
This shows that lifestyle itself cannot give liberation.
Kṛṣṇa is advising Arjuna to remain in the
society and attain the goal of jñānakarma-
sannyāsa. But Arjuna mistakes the sannyāsa
as āśrama-sannyāsa and sees contradiction in
Kṛṣṇa’s teaching.)
16. 1. (5.7-9) A pure soul doesn’t become
entangled because, although he’s working,
he fixes his mind on Krishna.in Chapter 3, as
Chapter 3 is more establishing the principle
of karma yoga as being a good principle and
recommending that it be practiced, But
Chapter 5 is talking about the practice and
results of advanced karma yoga or even
bhakti yoga.)
5.8-9. This is the condition of a person who
is performing nishkama karma yoga. He is
doing his duty, and, as stated in 3.27, he
knows that it is the modes which are acting,
not him
22. (5.10-12)(5.10-12) One who does his duty in this
way, for Krishna, becomes peaceful,
whereas those who are after enjoying the
fruits of their work become entangled.
5.105.10. This is the devotee’s/nishkama karma
yogi’s result. He is unaffected by reactions.
Nice example of the lotus on water.
5.115.11. The yogi is always acting for
purification only.
5.12.5.12. So the devotee advances nicely and
becomes liberated, whereas the materialist
becomes more and more entangled.

17. 5.165.16. The result of understanding all this (including about the Supersoul’s place in the whole picture) is
that one becomes nicely enlightened about how things are working within this world.
The person who knows that his activities are being carried out by the material nature after being
sanctioned by the Supersoul attains enlightenment through that knowledge. This is an elaboration on
the principle briefly mentioned in 3.27.3.27.
5.135.13. The happy condition of the devotee/ni k€ma karma yogi. He is not the cause of his
activities, and so is unaffected by them.
5.145.14. The modes are doing everything, not the soul.
Soul does not:
create activities
induce others to act
create the fruits of action
5.155.15. The Supreme Lord is not responsible either (This means the Supersoul, as He is referred to as
vibhuh, or one who is controlling this world).

19. 5.245.24. This is the higher taste of 2.59.
Experienced through working in relation to the
Supersoul.
This is why it is possible for him to be so tolerant.
5.265.26. To achieve the state being described in
5.23-5.255.23-5.25 it will take time. But here Krishna is
encouraging us to keep going.
We can reach it in “the very near future.”
How is it going to happen in the near future if it
is so hard?.
11-Fixing his consciousness on the Lord, the person who has
learned the above knowledge sees all living beings equally.
Knowing material delights to be temporary he doesn’t delight
in them. (5.17-235.17-23) (Knowledge is not enough. One needs to
take shelter of the Supreme to be liberated.)
* Essentially the person described between 5. 17 & 265. 17 & 26
is on the advanced platform of buddhi yoga, is in knowledge
of the Supersoul, and is more or less liberated.
5.175.17. “tad buddhayas” “tad atmanas.” The “tat” is the
Supersoul referred to in verse 15.
5.185.18.here sees such equality because he sees all the other
entities in relation to the Supersoul. This “true knowledge”
is the knowledge of everything in relation to the Supersoul.
5.19-205.19-20.. So this is also describing the person who is
seeing the Supersoul or K Ša.
(5.20) But our gurus say that this applies also
to practising devotees. We should try for this.
5.215.21. Same.
5.225.22. Nice point about sense gratification.
BaladevaVidyabh™ ana says that a nectar-
drinker is not interested in eating mud
5.235.23. So we really have to learn to be tolerant. At least we
should become that tolerant before we die.
And how do we achieve it? Through fixing our
minds on the Supersoul.
22-Tolerating and checking bodily and mental
urges, his happiness, activities and goals are
within. He is sinless, works for the welfare of
all. He is absorbed in trying for the Supreme,
and soon he will reach It.

shall stop Karma. This the Yogi proceeds to do by training his mental faculties to be conscious of nothing else but
Jiva (consciousness). Thus even mental activity is not permitted. The training is consummated in eight stages.
