Editor's Notes
Today’s presentation explains how BGE supports the community & economy. Our core values including Reliability, Innovation, Diversity, Safety and Efficiency will be highlighted.
A little bit about BGE –
We serve central MD. About 1.9 million customers. Roughly 2500 square miles to Include Baltimore City and parts of the 9 surrounding counties.
This year marks 200 years of service.
First gas company in the united states.
We are owned by Exelon. We have sister utilities in Chicago, Philadelphia, Delmarva, Atlantic City and Washington, DC.
BGE is the largest energy provider in Maryland.
Our largest area of service is Baltimore County, followed by Baltimore City.
We are committed to having strong relationships with stakeholders and partners in ALL of our service areas.
We are also committed to providing economic development support in more ways than just the historical or traditional methods that are usually referred.
Other ways we support economic development include –
Hosting Thought Leadership events
Charitable Contributions, etc.
These areas aren’t new to BGE, but they are now more attached to our economic development support strategy.
BGE provides 3.8B in economic output.
We purchase $1B in goods and services
Though we have only 3200 employees, we support about 10,000 full time jobs in the state.
Other ways we help strengthen the economy include our SEED program for new and expanding businesses
Our annual investment on infrastructure to ensure reliability
Spending and tax contributions of our employees
We see ALL our outputs as tools to help keep businesses thriving to support jobs and consumerism. The energy and programs we deliver is a driver of the economy.
Energy Efficiency is not just about the environment,
32,000 business have taken advantage of our programs.
1000 full time contractors are employed as a result of our programs.
Our program helped to reduce energy costs by more than $1B
Reduced electric consumption by 1 million megawatt hours – equivalent to one medium sized peak power plant
In 2015, we launched a new economic program known as SEED
It’s an incentive used to provide qualifying businesses with cost savings toward their energy. Hopefully enhance whatever state and local incentives that are provided to businesses to attract and assist with their growth.
SEED provides qualifying businesses with a 25% distribution discount for gas and electric.
Businesses in enterprise zones can also receive a reduction toward energy construction charges.
BGE serves 8 out of 28 Enterprise Zone areas
Some we serve only gas or only electric. SEED can only apply to the service we provide
Businesses must complete a four page application.
We partner with local and state economic development organizations to provide a proper review and background check and approvals can be provided before BGE work begins.
For more information on SEED , you can visit our web sites to download brochures.
Recently we started partnering with local high schools to introduce potential careers at BGE or the utility industry. We provide field trips, mentoring, internships and apprenticeships.
Supplier Diversity is a core value at BGE. Our program Focus 25 teaches diverse certified business how to do business with BGE.
We aim to direct at least 25% of our spend with diverse certified companies.
Three events you want to remember:
We use these events to educate on various ways we support the community and businesses.
Please plan to come to our breakfast on June 7th!
These final two slides stress ho active we are in the community.
23,000 volunteer hours bringing value to nonprofits and beneficiaries is one example.
Since 2012, when we joined the Exelon family, we’ve donated nearly $13M to non-profits to support:
Education
The environment
Arts and Culture
Community Development
We look forward to being a continued partner to all of you.
