Op 6 november 2010 werd de landelijke dag van het Burkina Faso Platform gehouden. Cheryl van Kempen gaf in de workshop landbouw een korte introductie over de context waarin NGO's in landbouw in Burkina werken.

- Landbouw in Burkina Faso gaat natuurlijk niet alleen maar over landbouw, maar vooral ook over plattelandsontwikkeling. De meeste boeren kunnen met moeite voor zichzelf produceren, laat staan voor een internationale markt. Ontwikkeling van de landbouw methoden is danook van groot belang, omdat het het verschil kan maken tussen leven en dood, tussen je kinderen naar school sturen of hongerig op het land laten werken. In deze workshop willen we hieraan bijdragen. Hoewel de boeren het zware werk zelf moeten doen, gaat de regering ook grote leningen aan om plattelandsontwikkeling te bevorderen. Zo’n lening krijgen zij bijvoorbeeld van de Wereldbank. (Worldbank sheets met kaartje van focus area) In dit project worden NGO’s specifiek genoemd! De regering ziet een taak voor hen: de technische kennis overbrengen en capacity building. Opmerkelijk is dat in het project rapport genoemd wordt dat voldoende voedsel verbouwen jaren lang niet het doel was van ontwikkelingsprojecten. De regering wil dit nu wel: voldoende voedsel verbouwen om iedereen te voeden. Het belang van voedsel opslaan (food banks) en toegang tot markten krijgt veel aandacht in dit project. Naast de regering zijn ook NGO’s actief op het gebied van landbouw. Zo heeft ICCO zich de afgelopen jaren ingezet voor de katoen boeren en voor organic cotton (ICCO sheets). ICCO werkt ook samen met Fruiteq, een Nederlands bedrijf wat groente en fruit uit Burkina Faso exporteert (1 van de weinige nederlandse bedrijven uit Burkina). (sheet over IFAD) IFAD droeg ook bij aan het onderzoek “More People, More Trees... “ (Overigens heeft de FAO momenteel voor 94 miljard dollaar aan landbouw projecten uitstaan in West-Afrika, waar Burkina Faso ook aan deelneemt.)

- Microfinance for the poorest people in Burkina Faso Burkina Faso is one of the world's poorest countries. On average, poverty in the countryside is worse than in cities. Fourteen percent of the population has access to financial services, such as microcredit. The organisation Microstart focuses on very poor people. This group uses loans for activities in food procession, cheap restaurants and growing vegetables. Improved living conditions for farmers in Burkina Faso The Office de Développement des Eglises Evangéliques (ODE) is a development bureau which was set up by ten evangelical churches in Burkina Faso. ODE executes multi-sectored programmes for rural development. It pays a lot of attention to supporting groups of farmers through lobbying. Together with its target audience ODE influences the process of political decentralization which is currently taking place in the country. ODE has been working with ICCO since 1977. Food security for cotton farmers The cotton farmer is struggling: cultivating and selling regular cotton has made him little profit in recent years. That is because its prices went down, while the prices to buy its resources went up immensely. In order to make sure the farmer has food security and is able to make a living, ICCO and its partners set up this financing scheme, that is focused on the south of Burkina Faso. More revenue from organic cotton The cultivation of cotton has been taking place in the south of Burkina Faso for years. Sixty percent of its export revenue comes from cotton. Cultivation and sale of regular cotton has made the individual farmer little profit in recent years. Producing organic cotton could be the answer. More agricultural production to improve food security ORGANIC (Organisation pour une Nouvelle Initiative Communautaire) focuses on rural communities in Burkina Faso. The organisation encourages the process towards a sustainable and fair development. ORGANIC uses a participatory decentralised strategy, in cooperation with 28 village committees. Sustainable and organic production techniques in Burkina Faso CEAS-BF (Centre Ecologique Albert Schweizer Burkina Faso) was founded in 1980. CEAS-BF is a leading expert when it comes to developing organic production techniques. Due to CEAS-BF and their work producers in Burkina Faso are able to produce larger volumes of products, of better quality.

- Eefke Mollee vertelt over More People, More Trees, waarin de participatory approach enagro-forestry centraal staan. Wat leidt tot succesvolle projecten en hoe kunnen boeren hun land zo managen/verbouwen dat de bomen onderdeel zijn van de landbouwgrond, om zo de bodem vruchtbaar te houden. Simpele technieken kunnen zo lokale boeren helpen om de effecten van klimaatverandering tegen te gaan, zoals compost pits, stone barriers en farmer managed agro-foresty. Regisseur William Critchley ging voor More People, More Trees in 2009 terug naar de gebieden waar hij begin jaren negentig gefilmd had om de toen nieuwe participatory approach vast te leggen. De aanpak waarin ontwikkelingsorganisaties samen met lokale boeren verbeterde simpele, maar gebaseerd op traditionele, technieken gingen gebruiken om water en bodem te conserveren. Naast het stimuleren van bomenplanten, werden lokale gemeenschappen versterkt, vrouwengroepen gesteund en duurzame investeringen gedaan. In More People, More Trees gaat Critchley samen met bekroond producent Josephine Rodgers van CountryWise Communication terug naar dezelfde gemeenschappen en komen dezelfde ontwikkelingswerkers weer aan het woord. Het toont de vooruitgangen die zich in de afgelopen 20 jaar hebben voorgedaan. Het bijgaande boekje beschrijft de technologieën die gefilmd zijn, geeft data die de getuigenissen in de film ondersteunen en gaat verder in op de uitdagingen die er nog bestaan binnen duurzaam landgebruik in de context van klimaatverandering. De film en het boek zijn bedoeld voor ontwikkelingswerkers, beleidsmakers, landbouwspecialisten, NGO medewerkers, studenten en de bredere professionele gemeenschap. - Simon van der Maal zal vertellen over het project pomp, ecosan, tuinen. Diverse methoden van boren en water naar boven halen worden genoemd alsmede het Ecosan toilet e\n het gebruik van de gerijpte urine en feces op tuinen. Eefke Mollee studeerde Environment and Resource management aan de VU en Ecology and Evolution aan de UvA. Naast onderzoek op het gebied van tropische marine ecologie en paleo-ecologie deed zij ook onderzoek in Uganda naar briketten gemaakt van organisch afval. Recent heeft Eefke meegewerkt aan de publicatie van een film en begeleidend boekje over 20 jaar bodemherstel en herbegroeiingsprojecten in Burkina Faso en Kenya. Simon van de Maal is gelieerd aan ZWO Geldrop-Burkina Faso. Simon heeft veel expertise met het boren van putten en met waterpompen. Verder bevordert hij het gebruik van het Ecosan toilet, de gerijpte urine en feces waarvan weer in tuinen gebruik gemaakt kan worden.
