Between 2010/11 and 2014/15, education spending in the UK is estimated to decrease by 13.4% in real terms according to the Institute for Fiscal Studies. Meanwhile, the number of personal computing devices worldwide is projected to increase by 100% from 700 million to 1.4 billion between 2010 and 2014 according to IDC. One student remarked that having a school-provided laptop, while not high quality, made a significant difference for homework even if teachers were hesitant to let him use it during lessons, as it gave him access to needed school materials.

- Schools don’t have money like they used to in days gone by (obvious!), but yet there is a strong desire to provide 1:1 devices, better hardware, software and services in order to improve teaching and learning.
- At the same time, outside the classroom more and more people are getting computing devices; from phones and tablet devices, to PCs, laptops and games consoles. How many people here don’t have a smartphone? Or a tablet device?
- Summarise the points on the slide. Schools have no money, pupils and teachers (personally) do. Why ignore the fact that they have phenomenal devices right at their fingertips, but shoved in a bag under the desk?

- Variety of services and software from big enterprise services like SCCM through to simple cloud services like Skype that can enable the use of these devices as part of the learning process. Rather than fight to prevent their use in school, switch to embracing and extending their user in all areas of school life.
