There are up to four bursaries available to members of the Common Room at Berkhamsted School to carry out projects focused on teaching and learning. The purpose of the bursary is to provide professional development opportunities, encourage collaboration, foster partnerships with other schools, drive change and school improvement. Successful applicants will receive £750 to support their project work and attend research sessions at the UCL Institute of Education. Recipients will be expected to attend seminars, produce a written piece, lead training sessions, and mentor the next cohort of bursary recipients. Eligible teachers can apply by submitting a letter outlining their proposed project and how it aligns with school development goals.

The TRUE project involves 14 UK higher education institutions collaborating to create open educational resources for undergraduate economics courses. Dillard University SoTL Research Institute 2012

Student virtual mobility - institutional collaboration possibilities
UbiCamp is an Erasmus project that aims to promote virtual student mobility through online courses delivered in English. The consortium developed templates to help institutions set up virtual exchange programs. Institutions would sign Erasmus+ agreements indicating support for virtual mobility and agree to recognize virtual courses based on these agreements. Students would be selected by their home institution but enrolled at the host institution during the semester. Results would then be shared with the home institution for recognition purposes according to the signed agreements. Institutions were invited to identify courses for virtual exchange and sign bilateral agreements by April 10, 2014 to participate in the autumn 2014 semester exchange.

TRA 2010: Wake-up Calls for Learning - Ursula Wingate
This document summarizes a research project that evaluated an inclusive approach to supporting distance learning students, particularly with academic writing skills. The project involved creating three online modules covering general academic writing, referencing, and plagiarism avoidance. These modules were piloted with two cohorts of business students and evaluated using a questionnaire. The results showed that students who used the materials felt their writing improved and they enjoyed the course. However, most students felt the materials would have been most helpful if available earlier and more integrated into their main coursework. The evaluation of the project is still ongoing to address the needs of non-responsive students.

OpenER, OER @OUNL
The OpenER experiment was a Dutch initiative that aimed to lower barriers to participation in formal higher education by offering free online courses. It received over €660,000 in grants and launched 24 courses in 2006 that attracted several hundred thousand unique visitors. While over 5,700 users registered for courses, only 85 applied to take a formal examination for certification and 29 passed. Evaluations found that for many users, certificates were not important and courses were too short or not in their native language. However, 9.3% of those who later paid for regular courses cited taking a free OpenER course as influencing their decision. Going forward, the initiative focused on sustainability and producing higher quality open courses as a regular part of university offerings.

- The acquisition of CFU og IWB was completed in December 2011. Implementations plans were submitted and being finalized. Service and support was ongoing. Best practice collection efforts were also ongoing.
- Guidelines were provided on classroom placement of IWBs and training courses for teachers on general and instructional use. Support structures were suggested for expert training and pedagogical support.
- National IT strategies from Denmark and Sweden were presented to incorporate a digital mindset dimension. Best practices would be shared through video clips and a data bank of example lectures.

Minimum academic requirements to be considered include completing high school with comparable results to an ATAR of 95 or having a recognized bachelor's degree with a 6.0 GPA. No separate application is required - eligibility is assessed during the admission application process.
Policies for uptake of OER in the UK home nations
This paper from POERUP provides a set of 16 or so recommendations designed to foster the use of open educational resources and open educational practices in the UK higher education sector, in particular England, Scotland and Wales.
The study method was to review the full range of OER activity in the UK HE sector in the last few years (such as the JISC/HEA OER Programme), take into account the policy environment in the home nations for HE in general and online learning in particular, and correlate these both with developments in over 30 other countries deemed to be of relevance to Europe and the emerging policy environment at EU level (to which the POERUP project contributed, as the author was both a member of the EU’s Open Education Experts Group and a contributor (Bacsich 2013a) to the Open Education 2030 workshop on higher education).
This paper focuses only on higher education in the UK but companion papers focus on further education and on schools.
In addition the project is also preparing policy papers on Ireland (by the same author), Netherlands, France, Spain, Poland and Canada. This set of studies and papers provides massive capability for cross-correlation and triangulation.
Our first EU HE OER policy paper (Bacsich 2013b) was made available publicly in September 2013, in advance of the EU’s Opening Up Education report (European Commission 2013). Ours has now been updated to take account of that and refine the EU’s recommendations for the HE sector. The first summary version of a UK HE policy paper has been produced for internal discussion in the POERUP project and then in the Advisory Committee.
Our UK HE presentation aims to take into account the different home nations’ HE systems and the different state of policy development in England and Wales (BIS 2013; HEW 2013) and working groups such as Open Scotland.
The POERUP project takes care not to focus on OER as an end in itself, but on the agendas that OER is said to be able to foster and on the wider agenda (called by the EU “opening up education”, but equally well called by others “open and distance learning”, “open educational practices”, or “flexible learning”) within which OER is embedded. Paradoxically perhaps, this makes it much easier to make recommendations and to ensure stability in the recommendations and consistency with other existing policies.
In its current draft form, the recommendations are formulated as 16 in a “home nation neutral” fashion, but the number of recommendations will no doubt change as the document splits into three versions. It is still felt to be valuable to produce a UK-wide synthesis, not least because several key agencies such as HEA and QAA have a UK-wide remit.
The project is willing to work with other home nations/regions/mission groups, Crown Dependencies and other EU countries to co-create similar documents. It already has some experience of this developed in the last few months.

The study method was to review the full range of OER activity in the UK HE sector in the last few years (such as the JISC/HEA OER Programme), take into account the policy environment in the home nations for HE in general and online learning in particular, and correlate these both with developments in over 30 other countries deemed to be of relevance to Europe and the emerging policy environment at EU level (to which the POERUP project contributed, as the author was both a member of the EU’s Open Education Experts Group and a contributor (Bacsich 2013a) to the Open Education 2030 workshop on higher education).
This paper focuses only on higher education in the UK but companion papers focus on further education and on schools.
In addition the project is also preparing policy papers on Ireland (by the same author), Netherlands, France, Spain, Poland and Canada. This set of studies and papers provides massive capability for cross-correlation and triangulation.
Our first EU HE OER policy paper (Bacsich 2013b) was made available publicly in September 2013, in advance of the EU’s Opening Up Education report (European Commission 2013). Ours has now been updated to take account of that and refine the EU’s recommendations for the HE sector. The first summary version of a UK HE policy paper has been produced for internal discussion in the POERUP project and then in the Advisory Committee.
Our UK HE presentation aims to take into account the different home nations’ HE systems and the different state of policy development in England and Wales (BIS 2013; HEW 2013) and working groups such as Open Scotland.
The POERUP project takes care not to focus on OER as an end in itself, but on the agendas that OER is said to be able to foster and on the wider agenda (called by the EU “opening up education”, but equally well called by others “open and distance learning”, “open educational practices”, or “flexible learning”) within which OER is embedded. Paradoxically perhaps, this makes it much easier to make recommendations and to ensure stability in the recommendations and consistency with other existing policies.
In its current draft form, the recommendations are formulated as 16 in a “home nation neutral” fashion, but the number of recommendations will no doubt change as the document splits into three versions. It is still felt to be valuable to produce a UK-wide synthesis, not least because several key agencies such as HEA and QAA have a UK-wide remit.
The project is willing to work with other home nations/regions/mission groups, Crown Dependencies and other EU countries to co-create similar documents. It already has some experience of this developed in the last few months.

- 1. There are up to four bursaries available to members of the Common Room to carry out projects on Teaching and Learning. The purpose of the bursary is to: · provide another opportunity for professional development; · act as a catalyst for collaboration as part of a professional learning community; · offering a focus for partnership between universities and schools/colleges; · deal with and initiating change; · manage sustainable school improvement. We would like to hear from anyone who is interested in developing and exploring their teaching and learning work at Berkhamsted. The bursary is for one academic year only. The award A bursary of £750 is provided to the successful applicant for the academic year. The support sessions at the Institute of Education are provided in addition to the bursary itself. Support The Vice-Principal (Education) will provide ‘in-house’ support over the course of the bursary. There will also be research sessions provided by the Expansive Education Network based at the Institute for Education in London. These sessions will allow you to design your research and work with colleagues from other schools. Expectation/outcomes of work: You will be expected to attend around 3 research seminars at the Institute of Education, London (the first one is on the 1st October 5.30-7.30pm). A final written piece will be produced by the end of the academic year and will be shared with the wider school community. In addition, you will be expected to: • Lead school inset sessions; • Provide copies for the staff development library; • Contribute to the Berkhamsted Teaching and Learning online forum; • Attend the mentoring sessions; • Mentor the cohort for the following academic year 2014-2015. The application process A letter of application with a brief outline of the area you are interested in as well as how it links to the department development/school development plan should be... We are happy to consider joint applications within departments or across departments. A short interview will be held within a week of the closing date. Eligibility You may apply for the bursary if you have completed one year’s teaching at the school and completed the GTP/NQT/probationary year. All subjects are considered.
