According to a report from the American Pharmacists Association (APhA), cancer death rates in the United States fell by about 1.5% per year for both men and women between 2003 and 2012. Cancer incidence rates also dropped for men and remained stable for women. The declining rates of cancer deaths are attributed to better prevention and earlier detection efforts. However, liver cancer showed the highest increase in both death and incidence rates, with hepatitis C identified as a major factor. The report recommends increased testing for hepatitis C, especially for those born between 1945-1965 who are most at risk.

EPCS is now legal in all but two states, though adoption has been limited due to lack of awareness, competing IT priorities, and geographic disparities between enabled pharmacies and providers. Experiences from providers and pharmacies already using EPCS show benefits like increased accountability, accuracy, and reduced costs. Widespread adoption could save up to $700 million annually through improved medication management.

- 2. INTRODUCTION An experienced pharmacy professional, Sherif Mohamed El-Refai is an oncology pharmacist at the University of Kentucky’s Markey Cancer Center. Sherif Mohamed El-Refai also is involved with several industry organizations, including the North Carolina Association of Pharmacists (NCAP). With roots extending as far back as 1880, NCAP was formally established in 2000 when four different statewide pharmacy associations combined. Dedicated to uniting the industry economically, socially, and politically, NCAP serves both its members and the general public.
