This document outlines national benchmarks for archaeology degrees in Australian universities. It was drafted by a working group representing all archaeology education providers in Australia. The benchmarks focus on expected learning outcomes for Honours degrees, which are considered the standard for professional entry. The benchmarks cover three areas: subject knowledge and understanding, archaeology-specific skills, and generic skills. Archaeology studies past human societies through their material remains. Australian archaeology makes significant global contributions and its universities provide leadership in specialized subfields. The unique Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander archaeological record of Australia from over 50,000 years ago is also studied.
