The Design Function, Time and Budget
3
The Design Function and Budgeting
• MWHC Public Affairs is here to assist you with
your print projects
• Graphic design is now under a MedStar corporate
system umbrella where designers who are
associates create print projects at no charge
• This works well for the smaller hospitals in the
system
• But MWHC is HUGE with a tremendous amount of
newsletters, reports, posters, postcards,
invitations etc coming from Public Affairs alone! 4
5
6
7
The Design Function and Budgeting
• At one time Public Affairs had three
graphic designers who were full-time
employees of MWHC
– We no longer have any
• How do we get all of the Public Affairs
graphic design work done?
– Public Affairs has contracted with graphic
designer consultants who are paid out of the
Public Affairs budget to do Public Affairs
(hospital-wide) work
• Our graphic design budget is being
taxed to the limit by all that our
department has to get done
8
The Design Function and Budgeting
• Therefore, when assisting you with
your graphic design projects, we will
utilize corporate design resources
– High quality design at no charge to you
– But please plan ahead; it takes
approximately 15-20 business days
– There are usually several projects in line
before your project
– If it becomes a rush job, you will have to
pay for contracted design services
• We will assist you by routing your job to a
trusted graphic design contractor

Branding Standards for Graphics
18
“The MedStar Look”
Branding Standards for Graphics
19
• What is a Brand?
– A person’s perception or awareness of a product,
service or organization
– It can come from a collection of experiences ranging
from critical analysis, first-hand experience, an
overheard conversation or even just a feeling
– Organizations use tools such as a name, logo,
messages, visual triggers and consistent images, to
express their brand in ways they hope will make a
lasting impression and, in turn, build loyalty
Branding Standards for Graphics: Logos
20
• MedStar uses three fonts only in design application.
– Avenir and Minion: Support fonts for all typography
– Stephanie Marie: Accent font used for formal applications only
21
Branding Standards for Graphics: Fonts
Arial and
Times may
substitute for
Avenir and
Minion in
non-design
programs
only
Branding Standards for Graphics: Colors
• The MedStar design system
relies on the use of the primary
Blue and Maize for its dominant
color positioning. These should
be used on all materials
• In addition, palettes of
secondary support colors can
be used in conjunction with the
primary colors as accents
• Support colors should not be
dominant
22
Branding Standards for Graphics: Curves

flyer newsletter
signinvitations
certificates
Conclusion
• Public Affairs is here to advise you and shepherd your
print projects through to completion
• We can no longer pay for the design of your print
projects --- but MedStar corporate design is free
• You must budget enough time (15-20 business days) for
your finished project to be delivered, as well as funds for
printing and possibly for design
• Rush jobs are discouraged; you would pay for design by
outside contractor
• Branding standards must be followed so we create the
proper impression for visitors and associates
• Upon approval, do-it-yourself templates for basic print
jobs are available via the MedStar Branding web site
Thank You!
