Sciennes launched the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGS or Global Goals) on the same day they were adopted by the United Nations in New York in September 2015. Eight of our pupils are taking part in a Model UN Conference (MUN) on Monday 25th March with Rob Crawford from UN House Scotland which will have a focus on single use plastic. At the P4-7 Assembly on Friday 8th March 2019 (International Women's Day) we looked at the UN and MUN and listened to a powerful speech on the environment, given by 12 year old Severn Suzuki in 1992. Severn's speech still has a powerful impact today and all the children were visibly entranced and moved by her words. As on the day she gave the speech at the UN Environment Confernence in Rio, you could hear a pin drop in the Hall. Severn was a trailblazer in empowering young people to use their voice and P5B were commended on their End Child Labour campaign. Charlie and Sophie spoke about their involvement in the Children's Climate protests at Parliament and we informed pupils how they can be involved without missing school on Friday 15th March by taking part in the afternoon at the planned Southside Primary Schools Climate March on Parliament. Families have been emailed with details. Families have also been informed of The City of Edinburgh Council's announcement this week that pupils with signed permission to attend in the morning will not be marked as 'unauthorised absence.' P5B marched out of Assembly with placards in hand and distributed End Child Labour leaflets in the playground.
Cross Country runners and P6 Euroquiz Runners Up were congratulated and we ended the Assembly singing "Put A Nose On It' for Comic Relief. Next Friday 15th March is Red Nose Day and pupils were encouraged to wear red and bring a donation if they wish.

BEGETTING THE IMPARATIVE DEVIANT - TUWAKUZE AFRICA
1. BEGETTING AN IMPERATIVE “DEVIANT”
ello ladies and gentlemen and in the fairest term friends. I am sincerely humbled to have
met you for I am convinced that we meet not as strangers but as allies who are driven by
a spirit of common interest and it is only by your courtesy that I am here.
As you might be aware, I stand to champion for the rights of underprivileged children through
education. Education itself is as old you can dare imagine and has been and will be spoken among
generations. History is abound with numerous examples of the importance of education. From the
mediaeval times of Greek Philosophers to date, many have affirmed the need for this noble course.
Allow me to showcase a few instances that cut across religious, movie, geographical, periodic and
musical affiliations. “… Burn the schools and you have no future...” an angry Head Teacher told
his students during the morning assembly in the 1992 movie, Sarafina. A flashback to the pre-
independence struggle in Africa affirms this push to the point that the driving force was the slogan,
“pen is mightier than the sword.” Luky Dube in his song Prisoner emphasized the need for
education by linking his then miseries to the neglect of pieces of advice he bared towards
education in his youth. It was education that bestowed Kimani Maruge, a Kenyan, the Guinness
World Record as the oldest person to start primary school. Just the other day in 2011 Sauti Sol
released the hit song, Soma Kijana which advices young people to concentrate on education in
their school-going age for the sake of their future. Giants of history some to their points of articulo
mortis have found education to be of enormous value in their struggles; Mandela, Gandhi, Obama,
Wangari, Susan Mboya, Joseph Mani and the list is endless. 2015 is not an exception. Education
still ranks as one the main obstacles that men and women are yet to overcome, reason for the push
of Education for All and Sustainable Development Goals.
One defining thing about the improved modern state of education is that it took action from a
couple of personalities who endured sacrifices that some of us cannot begin to imagine. They
redefined their profiles and that of their people by bending the arc of history towards a better day.
They emphatically admit (ted) that education remains (ned) a key maxim in their pursuit knowing
that their success would beget that of other people. Come to think over it, I suppose it takes some
form of “insanity” to do some of these things.
Therefore as we meet here today, I wish to touch the most fragile part of your conscience and
beseech you to follow the footsteps of these aforementioned persons. I frankly admit that it is their
“genius-like” works that helped me with a certain level alienated majesty recognize my own
rejected thoughts of the plight of the children at Victorious Joy education Center. 60 out of 139 of
these children are orphans. They are not only have four teachers in the whole school but they also
know-not of a Library because they own none. Some have known the pangs of hunger from an
early age and they cannot help it. With these predicaments, I summoned up enough courage and

Adding Value…to Life!!
2. began meeting the situation of these children in 2013 for I knew that they were the future of the
world. So far I have initiated volunteer programs such as Project Nikuze (Mentorship), Mwalimu
Bora (free teaching) and a Library project which are yet to achieve much.
Possibly in the modest of all terms the best me and you can do to these children is accord them a
seldom second chance. A chance that understands their triumph heavily relies on our goodwill and
support or rather a rare touch of the hand of a stranger. A chance that redefines them towards their
future. That said, I request you to come with me, step by step and make sure that what began 2
years ago in the depth of whether or not it will succeed, accomplishes its goal. I am Tuwakuze
Africa.
Thank you and May God bless you.
