Grammar – ‘Want’ plus infinitive
‘want + infinite form of the Verb
infinitive form – to
Do you want to play football?
Yes, I want to play football.
Does she want to watch TV?
No, she doesn’t want to watch TV.
We use the verb ‘want’ to talk about
our wishes or desires. We usually use
the verb ‘want’ in the present simple
tense.
‘want’ + noun.
Do you want a cup of tea?
Yes, I want a cup of tea.
Does he want a piece of cake?
No, he doesn’t want a piece of cake.
If we use another verb after the verb ‘want’,
we must use the infinitive form of the verb.
infinitive form = to
When we speak, we often pronounce
‘want to’ as ‘wanna’. This is fine in
spoken English, but we cannot write
‘wanna’.
We cannot use ‘wanna’ with the ‘he’,
‘she’, it’ form ‘wants to’.
We can also use the verb ‘want’ to talk about the future, even
in the present simple tense. When we do this, we often
include a time with the correct preposition to show when we
want to do it.
