Grammar – Present Perfect or Past Simple with ‘for’ and ‘since’
We learned about how we can use the time words ‘for’ and ‘since’ with the
present perfect tense. When we use these time words with present perfect
tense, it tells us that the action has started, but it has not finished yet.

Present Simple + “for”
If we use ‘for’ with the past simple tense, it tells us that the action
started in the past and that it happened for a period of time, but it
has now finished.

Model: I lived in Naryn for 10 years. Then I moved to Balykchy with my family
and we lived there for 8 years. Now I live in Bishkek. I have lived here for 6
years. I studied in Manas University for 5 years. I worked in Germany for 6
months. I visited many countries when I worked there. I’ve been to Berlin,
Dresden, Prague and Vienna. Now I work in London school. I have worked
here for 6 months.
Three strikes and you’re a liar
Students ask their partners a Yes/ No “Have you ever…?” question, e.g. “Have you ever
been to Mongolia?” Their partner must answer “Yes, I have” even if it’s not true. After 3
more questions about the details (which they can also lie when answering if they like),
e.g. “When did you go to Mongolia?”/ “What kind of food did you eat?”/ “What was the
weather like?” the questioner should guess whether the original answer was true or
false.
