There are some common obstacles that may get in the way
of our ability to solve a problem quickly and efficiently, such
as existing assumptions, functional fixedness, misleading or
irrelevant information and mental sets.
Existing Assumptions
In attempting to problem-solve, it’s possible to
make assumptions about the constraints that
may make a certain solution untenable. This can
lead to a temptation to not even try some poten-
tial solutions.
Functional Fixedness
There may also be a tendency to view problems
in a customary manner, which can prevent people
from clearly seeing the different options available
that could lead to a solution.
A mental set can hinder us in seeking
alternative solutions, as this is a ten-
dency to focus only on solutions that
have worked in the past.
Misleading or Irrelevant Information
It is important to distinguish between informa-
tion that is relevant to the problem and informa-
tion that isn’t to avoid choosing a flawed solution.
The more complex a problem, the trickier it is to
not become distracted by misleading data.
Mental Set
Finally, a mental set can hinder us in seeking al-
ternative solutions, as this is a tendency to focus
only on solutions that have worked in the past.
An inflexible mental set can make it more chal-
lenging to find effective solutions.
