Wilkins shared with attendees a definition of patient-centered communications, provided practical examples of patient-centered communication skills in a hospital setting, contrasted a patient-centered style of communications with the more traditional physician-directed or paternalistic communication style and shared evidence demonstrating the benefits of clinician adoption of a patient-centered communication style and skills.
Wilkins identified the top 5 clinician-patient communication gaps found in most hospitals, including examples along with how these clinician-patient communication gaps impact the patients, clinicians and the organization. Obesity rates in America have doubled over the last 50 years, with over 30% of adults now clinically obese. Long term effects of obesity include increased risk of diseases like diabetes and heart disease, as well as lower life expectancy and earnings. If current trends continue, it's projected that 74% of Americans will be overweight or obese by 2020. The food industry and fast food restaurants contribute significantly through highly processed foods high in fat, sugar, and calories. Efforts are needed for education, healthier school lunches, preventive healthcare access, and taxes on unhealthy foods to help tackle the costly issue of obesity.
Fight Colorectal Cancer Who We Are Presentation
Fight Colorectal Cancer is a non-profit organization with 3 goals: patient support and awareness, advocacy, and funding research. They provide education and resources to patients and caregivers about colorectal cancer prevention, screening, treatment and living with the disease. Their services include an answer line, webinars, newsletters and social media community for patients. They also advocate for policy changes and research funding, and have awarded over $250,000 in research grants. Their mission is to demand a cure for colon and rectal cancers through supporting patients and survivors, and changing policies to increase research.
C3 nutrition programs development for healthy communities
1) Recent non-European immigrants have worse health outcomes than Canadian-born citizens and are more likely to be overweight or obese.
2) There is a need to develop nutrition programs for immigrant communities focused on preventing diseases like diabetes and heart disease. Programs should educate on healthy diets, lifestyles, and maintaining a healthy body mass index.
3) A case study example is provided of a pastor who was able to heal a leg wound and improve health through a specialized nutrition regimen prescribed by a registered nutrition counselor.

Cell Therapy Expansion and Challenges in Autoimmune Disease
There is increasing confidence that cell therapies will soon play a role in the treatment of autoimmune disorders, but the extent of this impact remains to be seen. Early readouts on autologous CAR-Ts in lupus are encouraging, but manufacturing and cost limitations are likely to restrict access to highly refractory patients. Allogeneic CAR-Ts have the potential to broaden access to earlier lines of treatment due to their inherent cost benefits, however they will need to demonstrate comparable or improved efficacy to established modalities.
In addition to infrastructure and capacity constraints, CAR-Ts face a very different risk-benefit dynamic in autoimmune compared to oncology, highlighting the need for tolerable therapies with low adverse event risk. CAR-NK and Treg-based therapies are also being developed in certain autoimmune disorders and may demonstrate favorable safety profiles. Several novel non-cell therapies such as bispecific antibodies, nanobodies, and RNAi drugs, may also offer future alternative competitive solutions with variable value propositions.
Widespread adoption of cell therapies will not only require strong efficacy and safety data, but also adapted pricing and access strategies. At oncology-based price points, CAR-Ts are unlikely to achieve broad market access in autoimmune disorders, with eligible patient populations that are potentially orders of magnitude greater than the number of currently addressable cancer patients. Developers have made strides towards reducing cell therapy COGS while improving manufacturing efficiency, but payors will inevitably restrict access until more sustainable pricing is achieved.
Despite these headwinds, industry leaders and investors remain confident that cell therapies are poised to address significant unmet need in patients suffering from autoimmune disorders. However, the extent of this impact on the treatment landscape remains to be seen, as the industry rapidly approaches an inflection point.
