Burial Ground Analysis
A community's first burial ground is a three dimensional historical document and the mepicenter of
its collective and historical memory. At the corner Barrington Street and Spring Garden Avenue
rests the Old Burial Ground, Halifax's oldest final resting place. Founded in 1749, it was the burial
ground for people of all faiths, excluding the aboriginal people of Nova Scotia. 12,000 people were
buried in this non–denominational cemetery before it ceased expansion in 1844 (Old Burial
Ground, 2011). The Old Burial Ground holds the remains of Nova Scotia's early colonial settlers.
This burial ground is filled with final chapters of a history filled with shipwrecks, hurricanes, wars,
epidemics, and humankind's struggle with nature itself. The Old

The central theme of conflict is dissected by various poets using numerous literary techniques.
Particularly, physical, gender, social, and existential conflict is explored using literary technique by
the poets.
In Kenneth Slessor's Beach Burial and Wilfred Owen's Exposure both poets create pathos for the
soldiers not in gunfire to highlight the most harmful pat of war is in fact not direct violence. Slessor
personifies "words [to be] chok[ing]" and the seasons to have "breath" in order to dehumanise the
soldiers, making them less than objects. This consequently, creates pathos for the soldiers as the
natural world damages them more than violence. Similarly, Owen depicts the soldiers "cring[ing] in
holes" to disempower the soldiers and create...show more content...
For instance, in Never Let It Die, Watsky disrupts chronology by referencing people "sho[oting] off
their own toes" – something that happened in World War II, with the tsar who weren't present in
World War II. This acknowledges that oppression and anxiety have always been present in society no
matter the time period. Thus, changing the order of events does not change the anxiety of the
people. Contrastingly, Eliot uses pathetic fallacy in order to illustrate the anxiety. The first Stanza of
Journey of the Magi includes detail of the "sharp" weather; stating it is the "worst time of the year".
This negative imagery reflects the attitudes of the three wise men, expressing their anxieties about
the new king. Additionally, Watsky uses irony and juxtaposition to highlight the constant anxiety
humans possess. Watsky ironically states his "mother is an 8–year–old girl" and his "grandson is a
74–year–old retiree" which is obviously not possible. This use of juxtaposition suggests to the
audience that people will never change and that anxiety will always be a part of the world.
Similarly, Eliot also uses juxtaposition to highlight that anxiety is fundamental to society. By
juxtaposing luxurious things such as "silken girls bringing sherbet" with the negative imagery of
"camel men cursing and grumbling", Eliot displays that even in luxury, humans are prone to
anxiety. Therefore, to examine the idea that anxiety is a fundamental human condition, Watsky and
Eliot both use various literary techniques. However, Langston Hughes' The Negro Speaks of
Rivers instead explores the idea that there is always hope, especially when society is oppressive as
the two are dichotomous. This is expressed when Hughes juxtaposes the colour of "muddy" brown,
which is typically used to describe negative things, to "gold" a colour that is usually positive. This

Beach Burial
Beach Burial says only that men die and are buried. Is this a fair evaluation of the poem?
Beach Burial is a poem which deals with many issues, not only about men dying and being buried.
This is by no means a fair evaluation of the poem. The poem in actual fact deals with the problems
in war, and it encases a hidden meaning, which is equality.
This poem dwells heavily on the problems in war. It describes how high the death toll is for both
sides. Slessor uses "convoys of dead sailors" to show that all these dead body's are very much
alike, with their movements and feelings being the same. It also outlines a major problem in war,
being able to identify and bury they dead properly.
"And each cross, the driven...show more content...
"Unknown seaman" is written upon the stakes. This is to show that the families of the sailors will
never know where their sons were buried. The sailors that have died for their county are not given
the honourable and noble burial that they deserved. Instead, they are buried on foreign ground, with
a piece of "tide–wood" for a tombstone that doesn't even mention their name.
In the lines "the ghostly pencil wavers and fades, the purple drips, the breath of the wet season has
washed their inscription" we learn that even the knowledge that the dead seamen served their
country will also be lost. The ink has already started to waver and because the tombstone is only a
piece of "tide–wood", it can be assumed that the tombstones will also be swept away.
"Dead seamen, gone in search of the same landfall, Whether as enemies they fought,
Or fought with us, or neither; the sand joins them together, Enlisted on the other front." Here the
responder is informed that the dead sailors that have been described in the poem are in fact from
both sides. The bodies were floating alongside enemies and allies, yet from the beginning of the
poem they were made equal in death. This can be seen when Slessor describes their movements
and feelings to be the same. The use of the word convoy further emphasises equality, as a convoy is
a group related in a common way travelling together. This shows that the "convoy of dead soldiers"

Beach: Poem Analysis
The morning is a very beautiful sight to see and even to paint. By just looking at this artwork it
always reminds of you being in a beach with the cool wind, the sound of the movement of the
waves, the seagulls squawking in the sky. What we can see here is a guy getting ready to set sail
for fish or just explore the seas. I also think if it's about the artist's experience of sailing across the
ocean and maybe fishing. I really like this painting and the artist's experience because it sets the
mood for me like fishing or just sail to explore new things. The colors for the artwork is pretty
good even though I mostly see warm colors such as orange, red, yellow than cool colors like blue.
Most of the lines that the artist used are curved lines,

Softly and Humbly to the Gulf of Arabs,The convoys of dead sailors come;
At night they sway and wander in the waters far under,But morning rolls them in the foam.
Between the sob and clubbing of the gunfire Someone, it seems, has time for this,To pluck them
from the shallows and bury them in burrows
And tread the sand upon their nakedness; And each cross, the driven stake of tidewood,Bears the last

He actually resigned in 1944 and never wrote this projected history, however the whole story is told
in his diaries and dispatches which reveal an Australian patriotism which is partly genuine and partly
came with the position.
In the poem beach burial Slessor writes with soft elusive words in a solemn, muted tone of quiet.
He uses long descriptive sentences that are heavy and slow like the lifeless bodies that Slessor
describes ... no rhyming gives it a cheerful or light–hearted quality and no abrupt sentences give any
false impressions of life.
The sailors are dead and there are lots of them. Slessor's precise words are "convoys of
dead sailors", now, a convoy is defined as any group of vehicles travelling together and
together is the key word here. All these dead bodys' personified actions and feelings are the same.
Using muted adjectives "softly" and "humbly" Slessor
elucidates how reluctantly but obediently they all come to shore, giving up their contented dawdling
of the night before that is depicted through imagery in the line "At night they sway and
wander in the waters far under".
In the sea they are happy because they have their freedom and are far away from the harsh reality
of war on the land. As soon as the bodies come on the land the verbs become rougher and impersonal

Beach Burial
Some of the main topics in a large number of poems are life, death, war and love. The two poems
Men in Green and Beach Burial have a similar topic of war and its effects on people. David
Campbells Men in Green is about a group of Australian soldiers experiencing war in Papua New
Guinea while Kenneth Slessor's Beach Burial is about the loss of life through war regardless of
what side you are fighting for. Men in Green's form is a dramatic monologue whereas the structure
of Beach Burial is an elegy. Similes are used frequently in Men in Green and Beach Burial regularly
uses onomatopoeia and the language gets harsher as the poem goes on. Even though these two
poems are both about war, there are many differences including the atmosphere, use of...show more

The poem is written to represent all soldiers, regardless of allegiance, and shows that in death we
are all joined as one, 'the sand joins them together'. It does not boast about victory but rather the
irony that no matter their race or country they all end up 'on the other front'. Again the lines 17 and
18 really emphasize that in death the countries the soldiers were fighting for are irrelevant.
Although the poem has a worldview, an Australian perspective is brought out through the 'sway and
wander' and 'waves and fades' recreation of the sea. Kenneth Slessor is presenting a less optimistic
view of the war perspective in Australia, one that does not celebrate the call to
