Indonesia gained independence in 1949 after periods of Dutch then Japanese occupation. It has over 17,000 islands with diverse cultures and over 250 million people. The official language is Indonesian, though most people also speak regional languages. Major industries include oil and gas, textiles, automotive, and electronics. Cultural exports include batik textiles, wayang puppet theater, and dances like the barong and klit. Biodiversity includes over 51,000 plant species, including the endemic Javan rhino and moon orchid flower. Recent economic growth has reduced poverty but inequality remains.
