3. What is literacy?
Literacy simply refers to the ability to read and write.

4. Importance of literacy: causes of illiteracy.
Many children in third world countries receive no education due
to poverty, and are therefore illiterate. Also, in some places like
Swat Valley in Pakistan, education of young girls is considered
illegal by certain groups (in this case the Taliban).

5. Importance of literacy: How can education make a difference in people’s lives
Education empowers people with knowledge, allowing them to acquire better
and more stable jobs. Educated people will have a greater awareness of their
surroundings, and will therefore be more independent. Also, with basic skills, like
the ability to add and subtract, reading, and writing, people have many more
doors and privileges open to them. Like Nelson Mandela has said, “Education is
the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”

6. What social entrepreneurs did to help the illiterate: sacrifices they made
Social entrepreneurs like John Wood have contributed significantly towards
less-fortunate communities around the world. As for himself, John Wood
left his stable and high-paying executive position at Microsoft to aid the
illiterate children of Nepal, and started Room to Read to help them.

7. What social entrepreneurs did to help the illiterate: what they hoped to achieve
As for John Wood, he hoped that by establishing Room to Read, children
would have opportunities to receive quality education and make an impact
on the community and world around them, as well as to instill in them a
passion for reading.

8. Malala Yousafzai
Malala is a Pakistani girl who is fighting strongly for girl’s rights to education
in Pakistan. Despite having been shot in the head by a member of the
Taliban in 2012, Malala survived and is still advocating girl’s rights to date.
She has delivered many speeches on rights to education, and has won a
Nobel peace prize in 2014. Even though the Taliban is actively trying to
harm her for advocating girl’s rights against their wishes, she continues to
inspire many.

9. How can we make a difference
We can make a difference simply by donating to charitable organisations
that support Children’s education, such as Room to Read. We can even
donate our used, unwanted books to such organisations, to give poorer
children a chance to read. Also, many voluntary programmes are available
wherein participants can travel to third world countries to help educate
children. We can participate in such programmes to benefit these children.

10. Conclusion
Through this venture, our group is now much more
knowledgeable about the subject of literacy in countries all across
the world. We hope that more children living in third world
countries will be given the opportunity to receive proper
education.
