The Israelites living in Egypt became so numerous that the Egyptians feared them and forced them into slavery. When the Pharaoh saw that the Israelites were having many children, he ordered that all Israelite baby boys be thrown into the Nile River. An Israelite woman placed her newborn son in a basket on the river to save him from being killed. Pharaoh's daughter discovered the baby and decided to adopt him, later allowing his biological mother to nurse him. The princess named the child Moses.
