- #44 New technologies are rapidly changing the way we live, learn, and work. This rapid transformation is creating extraordinary opportunities for people around the world. Over the past eighteen months, we have launched AI for Good initiatives to empower others in new and more impactful ways to help create a more sustainable and accessible world. One of the most important questions for our time is not about what computers can do, it's about what computers should do. The world will see what a compelling force for good AI can be when it's used well in partnership with innovative NGOs and humanitarian organizations to solve some of the world’s greatest humanitarian issues. With AI for Earth and AI for Accessibility already under way, AI for Humanitarian Action becomes the third program in our AI for Social Good initiative.
- #45 AI for Humanitarian Action is a new $40-million dollar 5-year program aimed at harnessing the power of AI. We’ll do this by working deeply with specific NGOs and humanitarian organizations through financial grants, technology investments and partnerships that combine our AI and data science know-how with these groups’ core expertise.

We are teaming up our experts in AI, data and computer science, humanitarian relief, and digital transformation with organizations at the forefront of these issues. AI for Humanitarian Action will accelerate the pace of innovation by managing strategic AI projects that demonstrate new applications, delivering reusable solutions, and partnering with others to expand and scale initial projects. Next, I want to share some examples re: how we’re bringing these partnerships to life through AI.
- #48 Needs of children. Every three minutes, a child is born with a cleft lip or cleft palate and may suffer extreme hardship as a result. In partnership with Operation Smile, we aim to improve surgical outcomes across the developing world. Operation Smile will use artificial intelligence to accelerate evaluation of surgeries. Last year, Operation Smile provided more than 21,000 patients in the field with surgery and dental care. Instead of increasing its staff and medical volunteers, Operation Smile will be able to expand its reach and help more children by leveraging artificial intelligence. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is another issue impacting children and families. It’s one of the largest causes of infant mortality, yet the root causes of SIDS are not yet fully understood. Microsoft is using AI tools, statistical analysis, and machine learning to provide new insights for scientists working to identify the causes of, and put an end to, SIDS worldwide.

There are nearly 25.4 million refugees, a majority of whom are children and youth who need help with education and skills development to access jobs and opportunities. In partnership with the Norwegian Refugee Council, the University College Dublin and NetHope, Microsoft developed a chatbot called Hakeem . The chatbot is being co-designed with input from conflict-affected youth in Lebanon who are providing ideas and feedback on features, bot persona, and courses. This will empower conflict-affected youth to discover and access relevant learning content anywhere and anytime.

Their interactive notebooks are ideal for data prep + cleansing and for build & training models suing MLlib. We recently also launched a specific machine learning deep learning runtime to make distributed deep learning easy on Spark. Azure Machine Learning services complements the experience with experiment tracking, model management and deployment. The AML and Azure Databricks integration is in private preview today, but we are looking to release the SDKs publicly in the next couple of months. There are real customers benefiting today by using Machine Learning to build their own AI models in Azure today.
