This document outlines the terms and conditions for the Bauinnova 2012 competition to design temporary buildings for disaster areas. It provides details on the competition timeline, participation criteria, submission requirements, and judging criteria. Contestants must submit documentation of their design by uploading files to the ingFinder portal by specified deadlines. 30 shortlisted designs will be exhibited at the econstra trade fair, where winners will be selected. The top three entries will receive prizes based on criteria such as simple setup, transportability, sustainability, cultural acceptance, and consideration of climatic conditions.
How to motivate private investment to retrofit the existing housing stockKredEx
The document discusses how to motivate private investment in retrofitting existing housing stock in Estonia. It outlines that private investors are typically housing associations, cooperatives, or communities of apartment owners. The purpose of retrofitting can be for energy efficiency, indoor air quality, or general living environment improvements. Successful motivation requires a complex approach including technical studies, financial measures like grants and loans, information campaigns, and establishing the benefits of retrofitting. Estonia's KredEx program provides grants, low-interest loans, and guarantees to encourage private retrofitting projects that have led to energy savings and refurbishment of hundreds of buildings.

Innovative and digital solutions for circularity and sustainability in textilesCISUFLO
CISUFLO project was presented during the “Workshop on Innovative and digital solutions for circularity and sustainability in textiles” organized by the European Commission DG Growth, last 15th October.
Dr. Jan Vincent Jordan, on behalf of RWTH Aachen, introduced CISUFLO as potential best practices on how digitalisation supports sustainability and on how SMEs can be supported in digitalization (with a focus on RWTH Aachen “Systemic Transition Support Tool”). During the workshop the DG CNECT presented the concept of the Digital Product Passport and DG RTD explained the “Research & Innovation for Sustainable and Circular Textiles”. The EC’s priority on the sustainability and circular economy underlines once again how important it is that CISUFLO is working in this direction to lead the flooring sector in Europe towards the circular economy.
Construction project management involves coordinating the temporary construction process to create unique structures and infrastructure. A construction project has defined start and end points and objectives. It requires coordinating many parties like owners, architects, contractors, and suppliers. Construction projects fall into categories like industrial, heavy engineering, commercial buildings, and residential. They proceed through phases from planning and design to construction, testing, and operations. Project management balances the constraints of scope, quality, time and cost to satisfy participants. Construction management specifically focuses on managing resources like workers, equipment, materials, money and time throughout the construction process.
Stockholm is the capital city of Sweden located on the Baltic Sea. Over 30% of the city is made up of waterways and parks. The city has a long history of sustainable urban planning dating back to the 1930s when it began planning for a radial development pattern with green spaces between urban areas connected by public transportation. Today, Stockholm has an extensive public transportation system including commuter rail, subway, and busses. Planning in Stockholm is a cooperative process involving citizens, agencies, and private groups.

The Building Materials and Technology Promotion Council (BMTPC) was established in 1990 to promote the development and use of innovative and affordable building materials and construction techniques. It works to bridge the gap between laboratory research and real-world application. BMTPC supports the production and standardization of cost-effective materials made from waste products. It also develops disaster-resistant construction methods and provides training and resources to help new technologies be adopted. BMTPC has worked on numerous housing projects using materials like fly ash blocks and ferrocement to help low-cost, sustainable construction.

- Engineering has evolved from military roles to become a key driver of technological progress and economic development in Germany since the 19th century.
- Engineers now combine creativity, science, and craftsmanship to design useful and sometimes beautiful products. Simulation and modeling tools are essential for their work.
- Current challenges include developing sustainable technologies for issues like electromobility, renewable energy, new materials, and considering entire systems and their environmental and social impacts. This requires interdisciplinary and holistic thinking from engineers.

2. Each year, millions of people suffer the consequences of losing
their homes following natural disasters, such as earthquakes,
floods or drought. Man-made disasters, often wars, add
substantially to the suffering. The 'First World'
is industrialised and developed, and delivers aid in the form of
money and material support.
The Temporary Building Award 2012 aims to
improve this material support by promoting
creative ideas and solutions; ingFinder with
econstra will award the Temporary Building
Award 2012 for the theme: Building in
Disaster Areas.
While the provision of food and clean water will always have
priority, the timely provision of suitable shelter and housing
is an important part of minimising the suffering.
Engineers and architects have always worked on solving these
logistical and building problems. They are the people with the
necessary creative and constructive capabilities required for
the job.
The competitors are expected to show innovative new solutions
and 30 of them will be given the chance to present their ideas at
the econstra, which is the first trade fair for civil engineers and
building maintenance in Freiburg, Germany. The top three will
also receive prizes in an official winner’s ceremony during the
fair.
■ who can participate?
It is envisaged that individuals or groups from
the following areas participate:
■ Students and postgraduates of architecture,
engineering, product design or comparable
■ Architecture, engineering or design partnerships
and companies
■ Other individuals or groups with the knowledge
to make a professional contribution
If groups are formed from any combination of the above,
it is important that an individual person is formally named
as representative of the group.
■ documentation
Documentation, in the form of image or text files, is to be
uploaded to the ingFinder portal. Following registration,
a maximum of 7 image files (e.g. sketches, photos or detailed,
scaled and/or annotated drawings, etc.) can be uploaded.
This documentation should provide a comprehensive overview
reflecting the full scope of the entry’s creative input, function,
construction, materials, building physics and ecological
aspects.
Documentation is to include a maximum of two A4 pages
of textual information 'detail sheets'.
■ registration procedure
Sign yourself or your company on to the ingFinder portal -

then add a new project showcase
1. click on PROJECTS
2. click on ADD NEW PROJECT
3. give your new project showcase a title
4. select 'Bauinnova 2012' in categories
5. complete the showcase description
6. upload your files
Competitor's entries will initially be judged based on their
stability and viability with further attention then being paid
to the following more specific criteria:
■ simple set-up
The constructions should be easy to set up: while supervisors
can assist; the people in the disaster area should put the
constructions together. Tools and equipment necessary for the
set-up should be as simple as possible. Connectors and couplers
will be looked at especially critically.
■ transport
The constructions must be optimally dismantled for transport
purposes (i.e. low volume / low weight). The constructions must
be easily packed and unpacked and, if possible, elements such as
packaging or tools should have secondary usage potential.
■ sustainability
Materials used in the constructions must be suitable for their
places of employment (i.e. they must work in all relevant climatic
conditions). Disposal of materials employed must be possible
without undue environmental difficulties.
■ cultural acceptance
People suffering in disaster areas benefit from a degree
of cultural stability, which can be aided by making the
constructions blend in with the local building topography.
■ specific climatic conditions
Each disaster area has its own specific conditions and matching
the solution to the climate zone is important. Climatic conditions
relevant for the solution should be addressed by contestants
themselves. We suggest that contestants describe in how
their assessment of relevant climatic conditions was made and
that they integrate this in their documentation.
