Todorov's narrative theory proposes that stories follow a pattern of equilibrium being disrupted, efforts to recognize and repair the disruption, and finally a return to equilibrium. The theory outlines five stages: 1) an initial state of equilibrium, 2) a disruption to this state, 3) recognition of the disruption, 4) an attempt to repair the disruption, and 5) reinstatement of the initial equilibrium. This pattern is demonstrated in the plot of The Dark Knight Rises, where the introduction of Bane disrupts the peaceful state of Gotham, his actions are recognized through a public speech, Batman works to repair the disruption by defeating Bane, restoring the initial equilibrium.
