Basic Skills-The skills in table tennis Includes;
1. Grip
2. Service
3.Footwork and
4.Various kind of shots or
return
Grip-is the way one player holds the racquet
A. The racket is grasped well by the handle.
B. The thumb and forefinger are placed on either
side of the handle.
C. The other fingers are along side the
forefinger and it looks as if the player is shaking
hands with racket.
D. The Wrist is held firm so as not to let the racket
drop.
II. Service in Table
Tennis
A. General suggestions for service
include:
1. Serve the ball low over the net, not high.
2. Serve to the opponent’s weakest point.
3. Try to develop accuracy so you can hit a specific
place every time
4. Try not to let the opponent know in which area
you will serve.
B. Service for doubles must
also be to the diagonally
opposite court. In singles the
ball may be served anywhere
in the court.
III. Foot work
A. General suggestion for footwork:
1. While awaiting the serve, stand about two and half feet
back from the end of the table at midpoint. Do not let your
body touch the table.
2. The feet should always be at the right
angles to the flight of the ball.
3. Always return to the original position after hitting the ball.
4. Usually, the body weight shifts forwards as the ball is stroked
or hit.
B. In doubles, one must
move to the side and rear
to let her partner step into
the center position
because the partners take
turns in returning the ball.
IV. STROKES
STROKES- refers to the different ways of hitting or
returning the ball.
A. Half Volley- Ball is met by the racket and pushed over
the net.
B. Forehand and drive- Player faces the table, racket
is tilted forward and the stroke starts at the table.
C. Backhand drive- Reverse of the forehand. The ball is
stroked with opposite side of the racket. Usually, the body is
turned so that the side at the right angle to the table.
STROKES- refers to the different ways of hitting or
returning the ball.
D. Chop- Forehand and backhand. The racket is tipped
away from the ball to counteract the top spin of the
drive.
E. Drop Shot- Looks like a drive but drops dead
just over the net

F. Smash- on a high return the ball is hit as hard as
possible into the opponent’s court.
G. Spin – Is a skill developd by top flight players.
