2. What is creative writing?
• Known as ‘artificial element’ of making things up.
• An artistic way of making things up creatively.
• The ability to produce writing skills imaginatively.
• It is set of skills that are used to portray an imagination in order to
produce a set of literary work. This set of work can either be literature,
novel, poetry, drama and etcetera.
• NB: Think of any creative art/ writing.
3. Mission Statement/Goals of creative
writing.
• To express one’s ideas and imaginations.
• To critique the society or political system (we will see how poetry
played a role in South African context).

• To attempt to solve/explain human behavior without prejudice.
• To retell stories in various systematic ways.
4. Poetry as a form of Creative writing.
• Brief definition of Poetry:
• The use of Language that creatively and imaginatively express one’s
emotions regarding a particular issue or event.
• Literary work that is used to express emotions aesthetically.
• It also uses certain patterns such as tone, rhythm and other writing
techniques to deliver the message.

8. Examples of Imagery in the Poem.
• Note the highlighted words in Yellow.
• “A skylight begins the apartheid in ironed out differences.
At the shores skulls have reappeared”.
In this passage, the skylight is used as an imagery
It is personified, which is figurative language.
Light is associated with whiteness or white people during apartheid.
Therefore, the poem suggests that the white people started the apartheid which caused too many
differences in the South African nation.
• “Price hike of black arrows would decide the fate of a nation.”
Black= imagery
Also personified. How can Black arrows decide? Figurative language
Black= Associated with black people
Therefore, does the poem suggests that black people would have to decide their fate in response of
Apartheid?
Also note ‘Arrows’= Sharpness, cause pain (and many different interpretations).
9. The role of Poetry in S.A context
• It critiqued the system of apartheid, and it still does today.
• It questions the morality of the political system (see previous slide).
• It attempts to solve issues relating to social inequalities.
• It provides suggestions on what ought to be done in the nation to
enhance the situation.
• Most importantly, it creatively expresses sensitive issues that people
are afraid of on regular days.
10. Summary
• Creative writing is a way of making things up.
• It aims at expressing sensitive issues.
• Poetry and imagery play a massive factor in creative writing.
